Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Joker #4!
Joker just admitted that he could’ve pulled of Infinite Frontier’s Arkham attack in a much more creative way than what actually happened. The Joker is one of DC’s most eccentric and unstable villains. He has a distinct flair for mayhem, which he pulls off in radically creative ways. No villain is like the Joker. Therefore, people struggle to understand the reasons behind what he does. Even Batman sometimes can't quite wrap his head around his nemesis’ twisted actions. This makes him unpredictable and naturally, a nuisance for Gotham.
However, recently, Infinite Frontier’s A-Day attack has been pinned on the Batman villain, even though Joker claims he didn't do it. It was revealed in a previous issue of Joker that he wasn’t the one behind A-Day. Even before that, fans suspected it wasn’t him and that it was Scarecrow, which Batman has seemingly disproved. Naturally, readers have been consistently trying to figure out who the real culprit is. Although there is no clear answer as of now, Joker has just shed some more light in regards to why it wasn't him.
In The Joker #4 by James Tynion VI, Guillem March, and Arif Prianto, Joker is insulted that A-Day has been pinned on him. This is not because of any innocent reason, but because he believes it was pulled off in a sloppy manner. Any slightly sane person or villain would be desperately trying to clear their name, rather than showing off how they could’ve executed it better. It must be noted that Joker is trying to clear his name, but only to not ruin his record of creative crimes. Only Joker would do this and that’s why he is DC’s most deranged villain.
Throughout this issue, Jim Gordon remains adamant that Joker pulled off A-Day. At this point, Joker becomes erratic and feels insulted. He then proceeds to angrily explain to Jim why it could’ve never been him. What follows is unsurprising to readers that know Joker’s past, but the fact that he relays his thoughts out loud is quite shocking. He reveals that he’s already thought of hundreds of ways to kill everyone in Arkham Asylum, which makes sense given that he’s been there so many times. But the big revelation comes when he claims that the gas that was released in the asylum killed everyone in their sleep, meaning that they didn’t suffer. This is completely unlike Joker’s normal M.O., it lacks any laughter. Also, Joker always leaves a message to take credit for his deluded crimes, but in this case, A-Day's true culprit still remains a mystery.
In another reality, it could’ve easily been Joker that killed everyone on A-Day. Therefore, it makes sense why DC’s villains are targeting him. However, with Joker’s explanation, his side of the story seems way more realistic. It lacks nearly everything that makes the Joker’s crimes so unique, in his own twisted and creative way. The true culprit of Infinite Frontier’s attack is yet to be revealed, but one thing is sure, Joker isn’t taking the blame lightly. Now, off to Europe to enact the next stage of his plans, Jim Gordon will have to make an important choice. Will he listen to the villain who haunts his nightmares, or will he go after the Joker to take him down finally?
