John Cena Confirms He’s Returning To WWE But Doesn’t Know When

John Cena reveals that he plans to return to WWE, though he doesn’t know when it will happen. A decorated champion who has won the top title in WWE for an impressive total of 16 times, Cena is preparing for his biggest summer yet with prominent roles in F9 and The Suicide Squad. But he’s also made no secret of his desire to return to the wrestling ring.

Cena made his most recent WWE appearance at WrestleMania 36, losing to “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt in a highly-praised Firefly Funhouse cinematic bout. Some fans believed that the match was good enough to be Cena’s last, as it essentially encapsulated his entire career up to that point and even directly incorporated some of the criticisms that fans had with Cena’s performance in general. More recently, however, with the news that WWE is ready to welcome back live crowds, there has been speculation that Cena could be eyeing a comeback. After teasing a potential return, Cena has now confirmed it. With a notable caveat.

During an interview on The Tonight Show, Cena was asked by host Jimmy Fallon if he plans to return to WWE. The F9 star confirmed that he would. But he was also quick to note that, given his busy movie schedule, he wasn’t sure when that return would take place. Cena also alluded to that an in-ring injury could derail production on the high-profile projects he’s currently working on. You read Cena's comments to Fallon below.

"Those rumors are true. I'll definitely be back to the WWE, I just don't know when... I haven't had my last match, and I can't wait to have my next one.

"I'm very fortunate, F9 is this week, I'm very excited about that. Suicide Squad, I'm currently filming Peacemaker, a comedy called Vacation Friends is coming out. All these opportunities have led to more opportunities, and as I've said before, once you do one of these things, the insurance doesn't let you go wrestle on the weekends. So we'll see what happens."

Cena’s remarks point to the difficulty that wrestlers face once they make the transition to Hollywood. Although the actor readily admits that he’s nostalgic for his time in WWE, he has to balance that desire for a comeback alongside his other obligations. Wrestlers can sometimes get injured in a freak accident or a miscommunication while performing the most rudimentary of moves. If that were to happen to Cena, it would likely complicate his future roles in movies and television. Although production on Peacemaker will finish filming about a month, according to executive producer James Gunn, Cena is attached to a few upcoming films that are currently in various stages of development.

The best-case scenario would be to put Cena in a short-term rivalry that would rely heavily on promos, limiting his time between the ropes. For the moment, many fans speculate that Cena could find himself involved in a feud with Reigns. The two sparred together in late 2017, with reports indicating that WWE could be planning a rematch for the upcoming SummerSlam event. Roman Reigns has only improved as a character in the last few years, growing more comfortable and finding his groove in the role of an arrogant villain. Their bout would likely bring a lot of attention and interest at a crucial time for WWE, with live fans returning to arenas. For Cena’s part, at least, he sounds like he’s up for it.
