Equal parts elegant and old-fashioned, Emily Gilmore is the Gilmore Girls character who seems to appreciate technology and popular culture the least. She isn't well-versed in the modern world and while she shows Rory videos of ballroom dancing in one season 4 episode, she doesn't talk much about movies, TV shows, or music. Emily loves throwing sophisticated parties and her Friday Night Dinners with Rory and Lorelai are always formal.
Since the show aired in the early 200o's, people weren't texting up a storm or checking social media obsessively, but if the show aired today, that would change. It's fun to think about how a main character like Emily would behave in 2021.
10 She Would Love Taking Online Arts And Culture Courses
Online learning has become popular in the past couple of years, and more and more people are interested in taking some courses so they can learn something new in the comfort of their own home.
It seems like Emily would enjoy taking some arts and culture online courses. She would be amazed at the ease and convenience of technology and she would constantly praise the coursework and teacher. It's easy to picture her talking about this at Friday Night Dinner, as she often a topic that she's passionate about discussing.
9 She Would Hate Texting, Emojis, & Hashtags
In the past few years, texting has become a preferred form of communication for many people. It's great to be able to quickly get in touch with someone, share a funny moment, or chat about a favorite TV show's latest episode. Around 50 percent of adults say text messages share the significance of a phone call, according to Localproject.net.
It seems likely that Emily would hate texting and that she wouldn't want anything to do with emojis or hashtags. She's a classy and sophisticated character who wouldn't understand why people enjoy sending each other smiley faces and hearts and food, and she would ask Rory and Lorelai if they like emojis on a regular basis.
8 She Would Rent Her Pool House On Airbnb
With the rise in popularity of Airbnb in recent years, people enjoy staying in apartments and homes when they travel instead of a traditional hotel. It makes for a more convenient experience and it's also great to have access to a kitchen.
If Gilmore Girls aired in 2021, it seems like Emily would become interested in renting her pool house out on Airbnb, especially after the tragic passing of her husband. She would love the idea of some extra income and she would keep Rory and Lorelai updated about who was staying there. In true Emily Gilmore fashion, she would love some people and complain about others. Emily always hired staff and seemed to like having people nearby, so it seems like she would find this idea appealing.
7 Emily Would Lecture Rory On Not Using Dating Apps
Whenever a friend or relative says that they've started dating someone, there's always a good chance that they met them on a dating app. Online dating has definitely become a popular, accepted way of trying to meet a partner.
Emily wouldn't be a big fan of dating apps, however, and if the show aired now, she would have many strong opinions about this world. She would give Rory constant lectures on why this is a bad idea and she would say that there's no way she could meet a nice person this way. It would definitely be pretty funny to hear her commentary.
6 Chilton Would Have An Instagram Page & She Would Obsessively Look At It
Rory learned many lessons at Chilton and not just academic ones, and she owed her time there to Emily and Richard, who paid for it. Chilton was a fairly old-fashioned school and valued the world of books, with students taking notes with pen and paper, but if the show aired today, it seems that it would move into the 21st century much more.
Not only would students be using laptops in class, but Chilton would have an Instagram page that was regularly updated, celebrating students' achievements and letting parents know about upcoming events. Emily would look at this page obsessively and would be the first person to know about everything, which she would love.
5 She Would Get Into Arguments On Twitter
Social media can be wonderful and difficult, as it's a place for dialogue and also an avenue for fighting. If Gilmore Girls was on the air in 2021, it seems like Emily would get into some arguments on Twitter. She wouldn't be able to help herself and before she knew it, she would be talking to strangers about various topics for hours.
Rory and Lorelai would try to talk some sense on her and convince her to stop, but she would become addicted and she would secretly love the interaction.
4 She Would Insist On Buying Rory The Latest MacBook & iPhone
Rory grew up privileged and that includes receiving many gifts from her grandparents. Richard gave her a lot of money for future vacations and Emily liked to spoil her.
Since Emily enjoyed spending money on her granddaughter, from decorating Lorelai's childhood bedroom to buying her a designer purse, she would likely indulge her with some Apple products. Whenever a new Macbook or iPhone came out, Emily would find a way to purchase it super quickly, and she would make sure Rory was up to date.
3 She Would Online Shop Regularly
It's never been easier to shop online and order literally any product under the sun. Sometimes Gilmore Girls referenced the internet, as Emily wondered why Rory and Lorelai had such a slow connection and Lorelai said it was great because she could make a sandwich.
But the characters weren't big on online shopping and there are many scenes when Emily and Lorelai or Rory and Lorelai head to the mall. Today, it seems like Emily would embrace shopping via the Internet and she would order something new almost every day, telling anyone around her about how wonderful it was.
2 She Would Look Up Many People Online And Spread Gossip
While people would rather not admit when they look up people online, whether Googling or scrolling through social media profiles, everyone does at one point or another.
Emily is a big gossip and she would often tell Richard or Lorelai about a friend or acquaintance's personal life. She would gossip even more now if she had access to everyone's social media profiles. She might even have to set herself a daily screen time limit as it's easy to see her getting too caught up in people's lives online.
1 She Would Misinterpret Things Online & Get Upset
Sometimes people post vague photos on social media or they don't explain themselves, and of course, sarcasm doesn't always come across.
It's possible that Emily would misinterpret a lot of things that she saw online and jump to conclusions. It's easy to picture her getting mad at Lorelai and giving her the silent treatment and when Lorelai finally got her to explain what was wrong, she would say it was Lorelai's most recent post or selfie.
