Each character on Friends has their own idiosyncrasies; Joey is the slightly dimwitted but loveable actor, Chandler is Mr.Funny, Ross is Ross, Rachel is the fashionista, and Phoebe is a free spirit. Monica is often described as being a bit of a control freak who is obsessed with organization and cleanliness. Since the first season, the characters knew that nothing should ever be moved in the apartment.
The same goes for Monica's cleaning habits. On more than one occasion, Monica's habit of cleaning has gone pretty far. Monica even cleans in her sleep and when she's stressed. One thing is for sure, the characters can always count on Monica to have a dust-free and tidied home, even if she can be a bit extreme about it.
10 The Car Cleaning Supplies
In season six, Joey pretends to be the owner of a luxurious sports car that's parked on the street purely because he loves the attention it brings. At some point in the episode, he asks Chandler and Monica if they have any cleaning supplies. Chandler finds it odd seeing as they don't have a car, but, comically enough, Monica has a whole bucket of car cleaning supplies.
What makes this scene so comical when it comes to Monica's cleaning habits is why she has the supplies. Monica explains that there was a dirty car in front of the building that she just needed to wash, but Chandler knows there's more to the story than just one car. Monica comes clean that she then proceeded to wash all the cars on the street.
9 Monica & The Maid
In "The One With The Stain," Chandler hires a maid to help take the stress off Monica—a bad move by many fans' opinions, seeing as Monica lives to clean. In true Monica fashion, she gets nervous and jittery at the thought of someone else cleaning. She says the line, "usually when I'm this anxious, I clean," and there's no better way to describe Monica's obsession than that.
The episode got even better at displaying her cleaning tendencies. The maid asks where Monica got her amazing tile cleaner. Monica is flattered and starts to explain her secret mixture until she stops. The maid may be good at cleaning, but Monica will never let anyone know the secret to her self-made cleaning solutions.
8 Phoebe & The Crumbs
Monica loves to play hostess no matter the occasion. In the show, Rachel and Phoebe's apartment accidentally catches on fire. While it needs to be repaired, Phoebe stays with Monica after finding out Rachel's flat iron was the cause of it. Between a full course dinner and constant attention, Monica also makes Phoebe cookies.
Being a guest of Monica comes with some cleanliness ground rules; Phoebe can't eat the cookies on the bed. Monica tries to act sweet and warns Phoebe that there can't be any crumbs. The cookies should be eaten in the kitchen or living room. Monica's obsession to keep things clean ultimately annoys Phoebe.
7 Chandler's Ball Of Paper
In the second episode of the first season of the show, Monica's parents are visiting, and she goes into a frenzy. She starts to slightly panic and recleans and reorganizes the apartment nonstop. Anxiety mixed with Monica's excessive cleaning habits makes for an agitated character. The best example is when she scolds Chandler for a wadded-up piece of paper.
Monica questions how left the ball of paper so carelessly on the side table. Fans can sympathize with Chandler as he faces Monica's wrath and tries to explain how he didn't need the paper anymore. Once realizing how worked up Monica is over it, he wishes he was dead instead of making the grave mistake.
6 Babies & The Ribbons
By the show's ninth season, Monica and Chandler are talking about their future. Chandler starts looking for a job while he and Monica discuss having a baby. In the living room, Monica has a slight freak out over what having a newborn will mean. She admits that becoming parents means that she won't have as much time to clean the apartment.
For Monica, it sounds like a nightmare. In reality, what gets her really worked up is the idea of the baby messing up her ribbon drawer. Messy ribbons it's an absolute catastrophe for a clean and organized person like Monica. To make matters worse, Monica freaks out even more at the idea that there would be no room for all her ribbons.
5 Chandler Cleans The Apartment
This has to be one of Chandler's greatest moments on the show. Being the loving person that he is, he decides to surprise Monica by cleaning the entire apartment. It's a nice sentiment until Ross freaks out, wondering if he got permission and that everything isn't in the right place. When Monica gets home, she immediately notices that something is awry.
Who would have thought that she would even notice the misplaced refrigerator magnets? Interestingly enough, Monica is happy that Chandler took the initiative to do something nice for her. By the end of the episode, Monica must have her way and gets to cleaning any area where Ross supposedly sat naked per the lie he told to stall Monica.
4 Cleaning Vacuum With Smaller Vacuum
No one ever really thinks to clean the main household vacuum with another smaller vacuum. This is only the intricate workings of a clean freak like Monica. In "The One Where Chandler Gets Caught," Phoebe and Rachel think Chandler is having an affair. They go see Monica and find her doing what she does best.
Monica is cleaning her vacuum with an even smaller handheld vacuum. Rachel expresses that seeing Monica cleaning this way means she's really happy. The moment doesn't end there, as Monica adds more fuel to the fire, expressing how she wished there was an even smaller vacuum to clean her handheld one.
3 It's Monica Clean
Monica starts a new job at a restaurant called Javu in season nine. This occurs after Chandler accidentally agrees to go to Tulsa while Monica stays in New York. Seeing as Monica is a clean freak, she has high standards and is impressed by Javu's kitchen. In "The One With The Male Nanny," Monica calls Chandler to tell him about her first day at work.
It's fun to see how happy and excited Monica is, especially when it comes to how immaculate the restaurant's kitchen is. Monica shouts that the kitchen is not just Health Department clean, but it's 'Monica' clean. Taking this into consideration, a kitchen that's 'Monica' clean implies that it's so clean that someone could eat off the floor.
2 A Mess Is Not A Turn On
Chandler still loves Monica despite her obsessive and cleaning tendencies, but he still doesn't quite grasp how to make her swoon. In episode 21 of season nine, Monica comes home and asks Chandler what he wants to do tonight. Chandler tries to flirt and spice things up and swipes the magazines off the kitchen table.
He then pats the table and implies that maybe they can have a sexual escapade in the kitchen. There's one problem that he didn't consider; he made a mess on the floor, and, for Monica, that's a turn-off. She sarcastically asks if Chandler is making a mess to get her excited and says "know your audience!" Putting away the magazines and cleaning the table would have worked better.
1 Ross's Dirty Date
The title for the episode, "The One With The Dirty Girl" says it all. In this episode, Ross starts dating an undeniably beautiful woman who seems perfect. However, she has one major flaw—her apartment is full of garbage and is overall disgusting. Ross tries to look past it, but he simply can't, and he breaks up with her. Monica, being Monica, can't sleep knowing there's a place that's that dirty and unhygienic.
In the episode's closing scene, Monica arrives at Ross date's apartment with a bucket full of cleaning supplies. Monica asks if she can clean her apartment free of charge. Any person would jump at the opportunity, but Monca gets the door slammed in her face. If she can't clean the apartment, Monica can at least clean the door frame.
