Here's everything currently known about Cruel Summer season 2, including its potential premiere date and story details. Cruel Summer quickly became one of Freeform's biggest shows every, making the decision to renew it easy, especially since there's a lot leftover from the season 1 finale.
Cruel Summer season 1 followed the intertwining stories of the popular Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt) and the shy Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia) over the course of three summers. Kate is kidnapped by her vice principal, Martin, for the better part of a year and Jeanette essentially steps into her life. Once Kate escapes her captor, she accuses Jeanette on national television of having an opportunity to free her, but not acting on it. Once this accusation turns Jeanette into one of the most hated people in the country. So she decides to sue Kate for defamation, starting a nasty legal battle between the two, based on lies and half-truths.
Cruel Summer season 1 ended on an explosive note. The show explored the reality of Kate and Martin's relationship, saw a temporary resolution between Kate and Jeanette, and teased a potential LGBTQ+ relationship for season 2. But most importantly, it revealed that Jeanette had an opportunity to free Kate, just not in the way that Kate had previously thought. It opens the door up to a number of possible stories for Cruel Summer season 2.
Cruel Summer season 2 got the greenlight in June 2021. As the renewal news came before the show even technically ended, it's a reflection of what a success the series became for Freeform. That success may be partially thanks to Jessica Biel's involvement. Biel saw a recent bout of success through her dual role as an actress as an executive producer on the mystery television series The Sinner. Her experience from that series likely informed her work as an executive producer on Cruel Summer, making it a success.
There's currently no release date for Cruel Summer season 2 since production hasn't begun. However, as the show was such a success for Freeform, the network likely won't wait too long to release the next season. Interestingly, Cruel Summer season 1 was filmed and released in just over one year, much of which took place during the pandemic. So Cruel Summer season 2 should be able to move through production in a shorter period of time. At the latest, Cruel Summer season 2 should release before summer 2022.
Within its renewal announcement, the show revealed that Cruel Summer season 2 might be taking a brand new approach from the first season. The Freeform series is playing with the idea of turning Cruel Summer into an anthology series, meaning story details for season 2 are completely up in the air. That means that season 1 finale's Jeanette scene revealing that she didn't see Kate in Martin's house but instead heard him may never be resolved. But with Cruel Summer's overarching theme of twisted truths, it may very well be a fitting end to Kate and Jeanette's story. This would leave Cruel Summer season 2 free to dive even deeper into this theme.
