Battlefield 2042's Leaked Mystery Game Modes Explained

The excitement for the upcoming Battlefield 2042 began with an action-packed reveal trailer before fans were given a taste of gameplay at Microsoft's E3 press conference. Developer DICE and publisher EA are successfully stringing Battlefield fans along, by keeping two additional game modes largely a secret. All that has been officially revealed is what the developers refer to as All-Out Warfare, consisting of Battlefield's classic Conquest game type and Breakthrough, a successful evolution of Rush introduced in Battlefield 1.

The name of one other game mode has been teased as Hazard Zone, but official details remain scarce. Leaks indicate that Hazard Zone will be like Escape from Tarkov, a notably different experience than that generally found in BattlefieldEscape from Tarkov offers players a chance to enter a game, find loot, and reach an extraction point in order to keep the items found. Over the course of multiple matches, players are able to build up an arsenal in order to better equip themselves for future excursions. The caveat is that getting killed forfeits all gear taken into the game.

The Hazard Zone leak definitely fits the Battlefield 2042 website's description of a "high-stakes, squad based game" that is "very different from the modes of All-Out Warfare," making the leaked details from Tom Henderson on YouTube at least plausible. The third and final game mode has a "[REDACTED]" title, with the reveal slated for EA Play on July 22. Henderson's leak seemingly confirms the notion that it will be what DICE/EA are calling "a love letter to [Battlefield's] core fans" - a true sandbox game mode allegedly called Battlefield Hub.

Battlefield 2042's mystery game mode will reportedly bring remastered maps, weapons, and vehicles from previous Battlefield titles to the game. The leak suggests Battlefield Hub will truly embrace the absurdity possible in the Battlefield series by letting players essentially combine games. The example given was the ability to have tanks from both modern-day Battlefield 3 and World War I era Battlefield 1 in the same game. Similarly, weapons from different games can be put in the same Battlefield Hub match, all remastered to run in 2042, with some old maps now supporting the new, increased player count in Battlefield 2042.

Leaks should always be taken with a bit of skepticism, even though these two alleged game modes aren't too outrageous. Battlefield V's Firestorm battle royale was more or less a flop, so pivoting to a new angle like Hazard Zone isn't surprising. The Battlefield Hub mode sounds like a great way for DICE to ensure some longevity is given to 2042, especially if custom game settings can be created. No matter what, speculation on Battlefield 2042's two mysterious game modes will remain just that until the official EA Play reveals.
