Though Aliens: Fireteam Elite will support cross-gen play, the co-op title will not feature cross-platform play between PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms, according to developers. Originally announced earlier this year as Aliens: Fireteam, Aliens: Fireteam Elite crashed onto the scene just a few days ago with an updated name, series of fresh details, and a Summer 2021 due date.
In an interview with GameSpot, Cold Iron Studios CEO Craig Zinkievich shared another new piece of information concerning Aliens: Fireteam Elite. "There is currently no plan for cross-play at this time," the executive said, while also noting that cross-gen play will be supported. Thus, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users will have the opportunity to squad up, as will friends on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation, PC, and Xbox friends, however, won't have such a crossplay option at their disposal. It's unknown as to whether a cross-platform feature may enter the picture somewhere down the line.
It's unfortunate that Aliens: Fireteam Elite is set to launch sans a cross-platform play option, especially given the game's emphasis on cooperative gameplay. But Zinkievich did specifically say that plans are not "currently" in place for the feature, which could indicate that cross-platform multiplayer constitutes something Cold Iron Studios may consider pursuing at a later date.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite hits PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms later this summer on August 24.
