The ABC police procedural, The Rookie, centers around John Nolan, a 44-year-old cop played by Castle's Nathan Fillion. After stopping an armed robbery at a bank, Nolan realizes that he's unsatisfied with his life and joins the LAPD hoping for a fresh start.
The concept itself provides plenty of opportunities for humor, and due to that, the show works well as both a drama and a comedy. It stands out from other crime procedurals on the air, as it remains light-hearted despite its high stakes. The series is full of hilarious scenes that help combat the dangerous nature of the job.
10 Tim Ends A High-Speed Chase From His Driveway
Tim's ability to remain unfazed and charge headfirst into danger has always been impressive, so him stopping a high-speed chase from his own driveway wasn't shocking. If anything, it just further exemplified what an entertaining and likable character The Rookie has managed to create.
When his football game is interrupted, Tim realizes that police are chasing a suspect right down his street. He gets in his car, still in his jersey, and pulls out as a car comes speeding towards him. The funniest part is that Tim appears bored and manages to get the suspect on the ground while still seated in his truck. He pulls forward into his driveway and goes inside, cheering as his game returns.
9 Jackson's Allergic Reaction
When Jackson had an allergic reaction to a substance he came across on the streets, his symptoms made him appear as if he were high. After taking him to the hospital to get him checked out, Angela spent the rest of the day trying to hide her rookie from their superiors.
Not only would he be receiving an award later, but Jackson's state was something he'd end up embarrassed about. Angela tries to hide him in a supply closet, but he puts his head in a copier hoping to copy his thoughts. Titus Makin's performance was so convincing that it elevated the entire episode.
8 Harper And Nolan Crash A Gender Reveal Party
Harper and Nolan are complete opposites, which is what makes their dynamic so endearing. After a man reports that his bomb-sniffing dog picked up on something in a neighbor's house, Harper and Nolan head inside to check it out.
The bomb was a result of a gender reveal party gone horribly wrong, and Sergeant Grey sits at his desk watching an online video of Nolan evacuating the guests while covered in blue glitter. The most amusing part of the whole endeavor is when Grey looks over at Nyla, who's covered in pink glitter. As it turns out, the couple is having twins.
7 Nolan Gets Arrested For Breaking Into His Own Car
Things never seem to work out the way Nolan hopes, and it's one of the main sources of comedy. Nolan has never had the best luck, and his politeness makes most of the situations he gets into unusual.
When picking up his son from the airport, Nolan accidentally locks himself out of his car. A security guard notices him trying to break in with a hanger, and the first time Henry sees his father since Nolan moved to L.A., he's wearing handcuffs along with a giant grin.
6 Tim and Lucy's Powder Bombs
If there's one thing Tim loves to do, it's tease Lucy endlessly. He puts a lot of effort into his antics, and Lucy never misses an opportunity to get him back. Lucy didn't forget the time Tim sent her on a wild goose chase for a powder bomb, and she gets her revenge after her last day of training.
The two share a sweet moment in the parking garage, and Tim seems touched when Lucy gives him a present. However, he's less pleased when it blows up in his face while Lucy tries to contain her giggles. She tells him that "it's been a blast."
5 Wesley And Angela Meet
It's still shocking that Angela and Wesley became the best, established couple on the show given their first meeting. But, to be fair, the suspect they were apprehending could tell they were into each other from a mile away.
Criminal defense attorneys and cops have opposite jobs, which can result in a general dislike for each other. Wesley and Angela end up yelling in each other's faces over their differing opinions, so there's no denying that they've had passion from the start.
4 Lucy Accidentally Auditions For American Idol
While making an arrest at the American Idol auditions, Lucy gets mistaken for a contestant and thrown in front of the judges. Since The Rookie follows American Idol on ABC, it was a fun way to create a crossover between a procedural and reality competition.
Lucy is so starstruck when she meets the judges, that she fumbles through her explanation and ends up giving a performance. Actress Melissa O'Neil actually won Canadian Idol in 2005, and it's not hard to understand why after hearing her sing. Lucy immediately fled the scene when Tim started calling for her, despite the judges trying to stop her and give her a golden ticket.
3 The LAPD Promotional Video
The training officers love to punk their rookies, and their fake promotional video is by far one of their funniest pranks yet. Lucy, Jackson, and Nolan clearly had no acting experience, and they couldn't stop looking at the camera and smiling.
Lucy kept forgetting her lines, Nolan tried to get a copy of the commercial for his kid, and Jackson asked if he could get his powder touched up. They were all embarrassed to find out they were the butt of a joke, but Sergeant Grey showed no mercy. He pulled out some popcorn and played the tape in front of everyone at the roll call.
2 Nolan And Talia Get Trapped In An Escape Room
Talia was a great addition to The Rookie, and it's hard not to miss all the hilarious situations she and Nolan would get themselves into. Nolan and Talia end up apprehending a criminal who was hiding in an escape room but discover that they've all been locked inside.
The only way out is to solve the puzzle, and they end up recruiting the suspect to help them. All three of them work together and get so invested in the game, that they're all high-fiving each other by the time they get the door open.
1 Lucy's Fake Confession To Tim
The facial journey of Tim Bradford made his reaction to Lucy's love confession even funnier. Tim's never at a loss for words, but Lucy caught him so off guard that he was stuttering and struggling to form sentences.
Lucy was trying so hard not to laugh, she looked like she was in physical pain. His panic only seemed to worsen by the minute, and Lucy reached a point where she couldn't hold the laughter in anymore. It was a bit disappointing for viewers who want the pair to get together for real, but it's all a part of the slow burn.
