Thor: Love and Thunder will film in New York this summer for one week. Marvel Studios originally announced the fourth film in Chris Hemsworth's Thor franchise in the summer of 2019 with Taika Waititi returning to write and direct after Thor: Ragnarok's success. The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is among the most anticipated titles of Phase 4 with the Guardians of the Galaxy joining the movie, Jane Foster becoming Mighty Thor, and Christian Bale playing the villain, Gorr the God Butcher.
Production on Thor: Love and Thunder began at the start of 2021 in Australia. Despite filming not taking place in Atlanta or anywhere else stateside, there have been plenty of set photos to surface. The first look at Thor's new costume and possible teases of Jane Foster's transformation are just a few of the things that fans have seen so far. Marvel has been able to limit the leaks thanks to the movie's use of The Mandalorian's filming technology and filming on closed sets. However, Thor 4's production is now reportedly on the move.
According to a report from Murphy's Multiverse, filming on Thor: Love and Thunder will move to New York at some point this summer. The additional filming will only last for one week. It is unknown which cast members will make the trip to New York City to film these scenes or why production is moving across the world to film here.
The decision to move Thor: Love and Thunder's production to New York for a short amount of time should be a sign that Marvel needs scenes physically filmed there for the movie. That is an intriguing decision by Marvel, considering Thor: Ragnarok had scenes take place in New York but didn't actually film there. That could point to Thor 4 needing to film at or near a specific landmark that Australia can't double for and that Marvel doesn't want to recreate with CGI. In any case, it is possible that set photos will leak from this segment of production once it begins.
If part of Thor: Love and Thunder does take place in New York, then what could it be? Thor has been part of fights in New York in the past, so it is possible that his fight with Gorr the God Butcher brings him back here. There is also the chance that this could be tied to the continuation of Jane Foster's story. Most expect Thor: Love and Thunder to have a large cosmic presence and focus primarily on New Asgard when the story does shift to Earth. However, the movie still needs to catch viewers up with what Jane has been up to since Thor: The Dark World, so perhaps she is now living in New York. Then again, maybe this is a way to work another Doctor Strange cameo into a Thor film, especially if Thor: Love and Thunder deals with the multiverse at all.
