James Gunn Shares Suicide Squad 2 Art Showing The Team Fighting Starro

James Gunn shares funny The Suicide Squad fan art depicting the titular team fighting Starro in classic comics fashion. Writer-director Gunn ventures into the DCEU with The Suicide Squad, the second attempt at bringing the mischievous anti-hero team to the big screen. After 2016's Suicide Squad failed to win over audiences, Warner Bros. looked to take the property in a new direction. Gunn's take will retain a handful of characters from the original film, such as Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). However, much of The Suicide Squad's cast will be comprised of new faces, from Peacemaker (John Cena) to Ratcatcher II (Daniela Melchior).

The Suicide Squad will follow the team as they embark on a dangerous mission on the island of Corto Maltese. Gunn's updated take will be R-rated and way weirder than the original film. Case in point: The first trailer for The Suicide Squad confirmed the team will go up against Starro, a kaiju-like villain from the pages of DC Comics who resembles a giant starfish. For any other comic book movie, this would feel like a strange choice. However, when considering the nature of The Suicide Squad, it is very fitting.

Artist Marcelo Damm created a piece for The Suicide Squad inspired by a classic Justice League comic cover. The heroic team battled Starro on the cover of The Brave and the Bold #28, their very first appearance. Damm used that image but switched out the Justice League for the Suicide Squad, using Gunn's characters specifically. Gunn then shared the art on social media in honor of The Suicide Squad being three months away from release.

Gunn has explained why Starro is the perfect villain for The Suicide Squad, since he's "a giant, cerulean blue starfish, but he’s also f***ing terrifying." He also isn't the only bad guy the team will face in the film, though he certainly has to be in the running for the weirdest. For fans who aren't as familiar with the comics, Starro is a surprising figure, and his presence in The Suicide Squad will surely inspire a lot of varied reactions.

The Suicide Squad will premiere in August as one of the many Warner Bros. movies receiving a dual HBO Max-theatrical release. It stands as one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and after a 2020 with very few blockbusters, its arrival will be welcome. Gunn has steadily increased excitement for The Suicide Squad, to the point where fans even began to wonder if it could come out earlier. It sadly will not, but there is at least only three months to go before audiences can see the squad - and Starro - in action.
