Thomas Jane, star of the 2004 Punisher film is teaming up with the writer of Logan as well as comic book veteran Mike Carey for a new series titled Lycan, from AfterShock Comics. The series will be produced by Jane’s production company, Renegade Entertainment.
Comic fans know Jane not only as the star of the second live-action adaptation of The Punisher, but as a writer as well. The actor is the co-founder, along with artist Tim Bradstreet, of Raw Studios and they have produced several titles, such as Bad Planet and Dark Country. Later this year they will team up with AfterShock Comics to bring Jane’s next work, Lycan, to stores early next year. Joining him will be screenwriter David James Kelly, who penned 2017’s Logan, and Mike Carey, who has written extensively for many publishers including Marvel and DC as well as several novels.
Initially announced over a year ago, a press release from AfterShock Comics has provided fans with a tantalizing first look at the book’s art, from newcomer Sean O’Connor, as well as a plot summary: in 1777, a group of big game hunters are returning from an expedition. When their ship wrecks, they wash up on the shore of an island off the British coast. Lord Ludgate, the island’s ruler, strikes a bargain with the hunters: he will help them get home if they agree to kill a giant wolf-like creature that is stalking the countryside and eating people. Thomas acknowledges the book’s long gestation process, calling it a story he had been waiting a while to tell, and that he was “lucky” to have found a creative team as good as this one to help bring Lycan to life. Lauren Penn, co-founder of Renegade Entertainment, praised AfterShock, calling the two companies “like-minded.” Likewise, AfterShock CEO Joe Pruett praised Jane and his collaborators, singling out Jane’s passion for the comics industry.
Thomas Jane is no stranger to the world of comics and genre entertainment as a whole. His turn as the Punisher endured him to many fans and the actor has stayed busy since, appearing in numerous both genre projects - such as The Expanse - and mainstream titles - like Hung, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. He could not have picked better collaborators for this project: David James Kelly’s Logan is regarded by many to be the best X-Men related movie and Mike Carey’s extensive bibliography includes numerous horror comics and novels. O’Connor’s art is moody and haunting, invoking the best of horror artists such as Bernie Wrightson.
Thomas Jane may have made a name for himself to comic fans for playing The Punisher, but his connection to the medium runs much deeper. Now, teaming with Logan’s writer, he will be bringing his most ambitious project to date, Lycan, to AfterShock comics in early 2022.
