Warning! Spoilers for Carnage: Black, White & Blood #2 below
Marvel Comics readers have been wondering where Carnage was during the events of King in Black and now they have an answer: he took one of his most terrifying forms yet as a symbiote shark. In Carnage: Black, White & Blood, the evil symbiote's whereabouts are revealed, with the Carnage symbiote seen as a monstrous red shark traversing the seas.
Carnage's most famous host, the serial killer Cletus Kasady, was last seen in the Absolute Carnage series, where he was killed by Eddie Brock after he threatened his son Dylan. By killing Cletus and saving his son, Eddie reawakened Knull, the God of Symbiotes. While the King in Black nearly destroyed the Marvel Universe before being defeated by Brock as the God of Light, the Carnage symbiote was seen in Venom #25 as he took the form of a symbiote shark. Now, a new Carnage short story is showing where the symbiote has been this whole time.
In "Carnage Shark" from Carnage: Black, White & Blood #2 by Donny Cates, Kyle Hotz, and Rachelle Rosenberg, the Carnage symbiote is hiding in the depths of the ocean as a terrifying shark. Carnage recalls his time as the King in Black's servant and laments his host was defeated. However, it reveals the symbiote Cletus carried was not defeated and would attach itself to the "greatest predator in the deep."
The symbiote says it was reborn again as the "red king of darkness." The story features the symbiote attacking a crew on a boat, while the new King in Black, Eddie Brock, tells him he is no longer welcome with him. As the symbiote screams it will kill everything, Venom's horde attacks. As he falls into the water, Venom's symbiote sharks attack him, which leaves the Carnage symbiote to disperse like blood underwater, as eventually his red completely disappears in the darkness of the ocean.
The Carnage symbiote might have escaped his last encounter with Eddie Brock and hosted the shark in terrifying fashion, but now that Venom is the new King in Black - he wasn't able to simply run away and wreak havoc to innocents. The King in Black caught up with him and used his own symbiote sharks to take down Carnage. While it seems like Carnage has been defeated for good, as readers previously learned, it's never smart to ever count him out. Carnage is set to reappear in the upcoming Extreme Carnage: Alpha #1 from Marvel Comics. Carnage: Black, White & Blood #2 is available in comic shops and online now!
