Kingpin Is Turning Daredevil’s Deadliest Foe Into His Winter Soldier

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Daredevil #29.

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Daredevil, Mayor Wilson Fisk (also known as the Kingpin of Crime) has been feeling an absence of control, so he's creating a Winter Soldier of his very own to kill Daredevil. Seeing how there's currently two Daredevils - Matt Murdock, who's in prison, and Elektra Natchios, who took his place as the new protector of Hell's Kitchen - Fisk has decided that he wants them both dead. This leads him to performing experiments on one of Daredevil's deadliest foes, turning him into a weapon that Fisk can fully manipulate, program, and control, much like Bucky Barnes' Winter Solider when he was forcibly brainwashed to be HYDRA's merciless assassin.

Following the events of Knull the Symbiote God's invasion during the massive King in Black event, Fisk is feeling rather powerless. His city of New York was the focal point for the invasion, though there was very little he could do to stop it. Therefore, as a means to feel empowered once more, Kingpin has put plans in motion to kill both Daredevils once and for all, He begins with Matt Murdock, who's currently incarcerated in Daredevil #29 from writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Marco Checchetto. Having him poisoned, Fisk then has a yard full of inmates assault the weakened Murdock, which was all orchestrated by the prison's corrupt warden. While the original Daredevil was nearly successful in beating them all, one of the final assailants managed to shank him, and the issue ends with Daredevil dying from his wounds.

However, the latest issue also sees Fisk checking in on an experiment that's apparently been going on in a secret underground lab. Contained within are several scientists surrounding large pieces of technology and machinery, all of which are connected to none other the the lethally accurate Bullseye, one of Daredevil's more persistent foes in Marvel Comics. While Fisk has hired him to be his assassin multiple times in the past, it looks as though Bullseye is being brainwashed and programmed, and Fisk remarks at his eagerness to finally have a Bullseye he can fully control.

It's going to be interesting to see what this new Winter Soldier version of Bullseye will look like, and if the modifications and assumed brainwashing will simply be temporary or will last as a new status quo for the villain going forward. While it seems as though Fisk is fed up with his volatile personality, the Kingpin still values Bullseye's skills enough that he's willing to invest the funds needed to turn him into something Fisk can program and use as a living weapon when needed. It very much mirrors the role Bucky Barnes filled as the Winter Soldier before he eventually broke free of HYDRA's control.

However future issues of the series play out, it seems a safe bet that this new Bullseye is going to be Fisk's solution for dealing with Elektra's Daredevil, whose more brutal tactics have seen her harassing the Kingpin's criminal associates. Regardless, a Winter Solider version of Bullseye controlled by Fisk himself is going to be a force to be reckoned with. Here's hoping the new Daredevil has what it takes to survive in future issues of the series from Marvel Comics.
