Spoilers for Green Lantern #1 ahead!
In Green Lantern #1, Sinestro, one of the Green Lantern Corps’ most notorious foes, calls out the Guardians of the Universe, the Corps’ benefactor, making serious accusations about the Guardians’ behavior. Part of DC’s Infinite Frontier publishing initiative, the issue is available now in print and digital.
One of the oldest extraterrestrial races in the DC Universe, the Guardians of the Universe reside on the planet of Oa. Obsessed with a desire to bring order to a chaotic universe, the Guardians have made at least two attempts to create a police force capable of doing so - the first were the Manhunters, robots who ultimately turned on the Guardians, and the second was the Green Lantern Corps. The way the Guardians have been depicted has changed over the years. They were initially portrayed as benevolent and all-wise, but that has changed over time, and now the Guardians are distant and cold, presiding over the Green Lantern Corps from their base on Oa. Naturally, the Guardians have made many enemies over the years - Sinestro being one of them. Now, Oa is applying for membership in the new United Planets and Sinestro has come to make his thoughts on his former bosses known.
The United Planets is holding a formal debate on admitting Oa and are listening to arguments both for and against Oa's inclusion. Sinestro is decidedly “against,” stating the Guardians create nothing but “fear” and even provides examples, citing the Manhunters and the Blackest Night as proof. He goes on to accuse the Guardians of putting out the fires they themselves started. He ultimately concludes that Oa’s admission to the United Planets will spell doom for the organization, as they will infect it with their fear. However, Oa’s admission is approved, and no sooner than it is, a terrorist organization with an ax to grind against the Guardians attacks, killing one of them in the process. Sinestro looks on, with an “I told you so” look on his face.
Sinestro would know, too, as he was one of the greatest Green Lanterns and has a unique perspective on the group. Granted some of this is colored by his own biases, but Sinestro is correct in that the Guardians are responsible for some of the universe’s biggest messes. In their distant past, a rogue Guardian named Krona was responsible for almost destroying the universe because of a forbidden experiment, a fact Sinestro brings up to the United Planets. The deadly attack directly after Oa’s admission may have just proved Sinestro’s point for him.
The Guardians of the Universe are responsible for keeping the peace in the DC Universe, but, despite this, there are serious flaws in their thinking, and Sinestro calls them out in Green Lantern #1 by writer Geoffrey Thorne, artists Dexter Soy and Marco Santucci and colorist Alex Sinclair.
