Grey's Anatomy: The Main Characters, Ranked By Power | ScreenRant

Grey’s Anatomy has the distinction of being the longest-running show of its kind in television history. It’s also one of Shonda Rhimes’ most critically praised shows (although it’s had some flaws too). Undoubtedly, the show’s main characters – including titular character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) - have been instrumental to the show’s success.

Fans have seen them get hurt, go through loss, and face every medical (or personal) situation imaginable. Throughout the show’s current 17 seasons, a lot of these well-loved characters also got older and have become more experienced. Not to mention, they also gained more power as their arcs evolved.

10 Cormac Hayes

Cormac (Richard Flood) is among the characters introduced only recently, having been convinced by Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) to come to Grey Sloan before she herself decided to leave the hospital. He is the current head of pediatric surgery at Grey’s Sloan Memorial.

Prior to this, Cormac had been a pediatric surgeon working at Preston Burke’s (Isaiah Washingon) Klausman Institute for Medical Research. Upon his arrival, Cormac initially butted heads with Meredith due to a patient’s case. Eventually, though, the two learned to work together. Later on, Cormac even asked Meredith out.

9 Atticus Lincoln

Introduced back in season 15, Atticus (Chris Carmack), who is better known as Link, currently serves as Grey Sloan Memorial’s head of orthopedic surgery. Prior to joining the hospital’s team, he had been a personal surgeon for the Seattle Mariners.

Throughout his time on the show, Link has continuously demonstrated that he has a lot of field experience. When working on a patient who had fallen from a hotel balcony, he made the decision not to stabilize the patient’s pelvis prior to taking her to the OR so that the procedure would result in a better outcome.

8 Amelia Shepherd

Shondaland fans first met Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) when she joined the doctors of Oceanside Wellness Group in Private Practice. Just like her later brother, Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Amelia is an accomplished neurosurgeon. At the same time, she’s also board-certified in general surgery, having received her certification even before she completed her neurosurgery fellowship.

Following Derek’s tragic death, Amelia became the obvious choice to take his place. The career move has also brought her closer to her sister-in-law, Meredith. At present, she is Grey Sloan Memorial’s head of neurosurgery.

7 Owen Hunt

Owen is, arguably, the most skillful doctor on the team, having served in the U.S. Army as a trauma surgeon. While in Iraq, Owen also saw action when his entire platoon came under attack. Unfortunately, he was the sole survivor. Following his discharge from the military, Owen struggled to adjust to civilian life, even ruffling feathers over at Grey Sloan.

Nonetheless, Richard (James Pickens Jr.) recognized Owen’s brilliance and ability to remain objective. This is why he asked Owen to become the chief of surgery after he was forced to step down.

6 Teddy Altman

Understandably, fans have a love-hate relationship with Teddy (Kim Raver). Like it or not, though, she is one of Grey Sloan Memorial’s heads of cardiothoracic surgery, a position she deserves. Just like Owen, Teddy also served in the military, enlisting with the U.S. Army after the death of her best friend in 9/11.

Prior to this though, she was already an accomplished medical professional, having become a board-certified attending surgeon at Columbia University Medical Center. After finishing her tour of duty, Owen recommended her to become the interim head of cardiothoracic surgery. She later took on the post full time.

5 Maggie Pierce

Ever since her arrival at Grey Sloan Memorial, it’s been made clear that Maggie (Kelly McCreary) is one of the most brilliant doctors that fans would ever meet. When fans first meet Meredith’s other half-sister, she was already interviewing for the head of cardiothoracic surgery position.

Although relatively younger than other senior doctors on the team, Maggie already boasts of extensive experience in cardiothoracic surgery, having begun her fellowship when she was only 25. Soon after, she became the head of a cardiothoracic surgical department. Hence, it made sense for her to become Grey Sloan’s co-head of cardiothoracic surgery.

4 Richard Webber

Richard served as chief of surgery when Grey Sloan Memorial was still known as Seattle Grace. Coincidentally, this was also the time when Meredith started her medical internship. When it was discovered that he’s been drinking, however, Richard was forced to step down as chief, although he returned as an attending after remaining sober.

Later on, he made the decision to invest in the hospital when Meredith and others decided to buy it. Today, he retains a stake in Grey Sloan where he also serves as the chief medical officer.

3 Miranda Bailey

When the show first started, Miranda (Chandra Wilson) was the attending general surgeon who took charge of Meredith and her fellow interns. She tends to be hard on people under her, eventually earning the nickname “The Nazi,” which Miranda was more than happy about.

Because of her exceptional skill and dedication to the job, Richard became convinced that she’d be perfect for chief of surgery. Miranda memorably makes her case while performing surgery on a patient. Today, she continues to be Grey Sloan’s chief of surgery.

2 Jackson Avery

Jackson Avery may be a relatively new character on the show, but he carries a great deal of authority, nonetheless. As fans may know, he can thank her mother, Catherine (Debbie Allen) for his appointment as chairman of the board at Grey Sloan Memorial.

During the time that Meredith and company needed more money to purchase the hospital, Catherine stepped in and offered to invest. In exchange, however, she gets to choose the board chairman, which led her to appoint her son. Today, Jackson is also the head of plastic surgery.

1 Meredith Grey

Meredith has truly come a long way since starting out as an intern at the beginning of the show. From the start, she showed that she is just as skilled as her famous mother, Ellis Grey (Kate Burton). In fact, she managed to diagnose a patient with a brain tumor correctly, leaving Derek Shepherd impressed.

She also displayed expertise in neurosurgery although she and Derek later agreed that they shouldn’t be working together too closely. Today, Meredith serves as both the board director and head of general surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial.
