The Falcon and the Winter Solider's new Captain America Wyatt Russell requested the use of Chris Evans' old suit for his MCU debut. Russell previously auditioned for Captain America during the early days of Phase 1, but the role eventually went to Evans, who became a staple of the franchise. Evans' portrayal of Captain America makes The Falcon and the Winter Soldier much harder to stomach, as its main premise involves the passing on of the mantle and of Steve Rogers' shield.
Right now, that shield is in the hands of John Walker, an Army veteran and the US government's personal pick for Steve Rogers' successor. Fan reaction to the new Captain America has been divided, with many coming to loathe the character after his appearance in Falcon and the Winter Soldier's second episode. The series is slowly positioning him as an adversary to Bucky and Sam, who refuse to work with Walker both because of their allegiance to Steve and because of his cavalier attitude to their relationship with the former Cap.
Russell's latest quote is likely to inspire more fan ire, with the actor revealing on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he requested the use of Evans' original suit for his debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 1. Russell says he wanted to use Evans' suit to feel like he was doing a good job, citing Evans' work as Captain America as the source of inspiration. Ultimately, Marvel decided against using Evans' suit, giving Russell a new one.
"I requested Chris Evans' old suit so I could feel like I was doing a good job since he did such a great job. And they gave me a new one."
For longtime fans of the MCU, there's no replacing the role that Chris Evans originated. Sam Wilson, whom Steve gave the shield to at the end of Avengers: Endgame, got Cap's seal of approval as the only worthy successor and most fans (and Bucky) seem to agree that the shield belongs with him. It may be a few weeks before it ends up back in his hands, though, as Bucky and Sam have to contend with the Flag Smashers before they get to a point where they can even get Steve's shield back.
After last week's episode, it looks like Steve and Bucky will be butting heads with John Walker for the foreseeable future, with Walker telling them to stay out of his way as both teams go after the Flag Smashers. How that conflict will play out remains to be seen but Sam Wilson is clearly going to become Captain America at some point during the series' run. The Flag Smashers could just be a decoy conflict until The Falcon and the Winter Soldier puts Bucky and Sam up against Walker and the US government once again.
