Benedict Cumberbatch's upcoming film, War Magician, has tapped the architect of the Jurassic World series, director Colin Trevorrow, to helm the film. Trevorrow recently wrapped production on the third entry in the Jurassic World franchise, Jurassic World: Dominion. The third film of the trilogy marked a return to the world of Jurassic Park for Trevorrow, since he left directing duties for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom to develop Star Wars: Duel of the Fates, a movie Trevorrow would later depart as it became J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
War Magician, about an illusionist who uses his tricks to help fight the Nazis, is a film Cumberbatch should be well-qualified to take on based on his prior acting credits. Perhaps Cumberbatch's most iconic role is playing the MCU's Doctor Strange, who utilizes real magic to face his foes. Cumberbatch is also no stranger to war films, as he stepped into key roles in both 2014's The Imitation Game and 2019's 1917.
CinemaBlend is reporting that the hiring of Trevorrow is a done deal, and that War Magician will be the director's next project. Currently, Trevorrow is hard at work on post-production for Jurassic World: Dominion, so there's no timetable just yet for when production will begin on War Magician.
According to Deadline, who broke the news about Cumberbatch's War Magician casting all the way back in 2015, the movie will be an adaptation of David Fisher's book, titled The War Magician. Fisher's writing serves as a mostly factual account of the magician, whose name was Jasper Maskelyne. Cumberbatch, who's coming off of working with Sam Raimi on the highly anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is likely thrilled to see that War Magician is finally heating up.
The story from Fisher's book suggests the appearance of a potential ensemble cast, as Cumberbatch's Maskelyne is the ringleader of a crew of illusionists nicknamed The Magic Gang. The description of the group brings to mind the team Wonder Woman fought alongside in her WW1-set solo film, or Captain America's Howling Commandos in Captain America: The First Avenger. A collection of memorable characters in War Magician could bring levity to a film that will deal with such serious subject matter. With Trevorrow now attached, casting could get underway soon for the other magicians of The Magic Gang.
Little else is known about War Magician at this time, but now that the project finally seems to be moving, that's expected to change sooner rather than later. With names like Cumberbatch and Trevorrow already associated with the film, anticipation is sure to build rapidly as more details reveal themselves.
