PG: Psycho Goreman's B-Horror Movie Easter Egg Explained

PG: Psycho Goreman pays homage to B-horror movies by using practical effects, but one in particular gets an honorary mention - here's how the horror-comedy featured an Easter egg to The Blob. Steven Kostanski is well-known in the genre for his special effects, having worked on action-packed features like Suicide Squad or Stephen King adaptations with IT: Chapter One. His PG: Psycho Goreman showcases his talents at their finest, with impressive practical effects that make the universe's worst enemy one of the most captivating. However, the horror comedy's The Blob reference shone through, despite how small it actually is.

The movie follows Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and her brother Luke (Owen Myre) as they uncover an ancient entity they name PG - short for Psycho Goreman - after a game of crazy ball. While he asserts he could make their worst nightmare quake, Mimi acts as comedic relief as she introduces him to "hunky boys" and a stylish Stetson hat. When their friend Alastair (Scout Flint) gets roped into their supposed fun, PG turns him into a giant brain with tentacles. As he lurches across the screen, he shares a remarkable resemblance to the pink goo familiar to B-horror movie The BlobThough, it isn't until Mimi refers to him as a "beautiful blob" that the reference is made abundantly clear.

The Blob has inspired countless horror movies and was even remade in 1988 by Chuck Russell. It remains a relevant contribution to the genre, as rumors circulated the internet in 2015 that there would be a remake arriving in the near future. As of this writing, there hasn't been any updates, with filmmakers such as Rob Zombie and Simon West having been linked to the director's chair over the years. By crafting a character into one that resembles an iconic B-horror movie creature, Kostanski continues to pay homage to one of the most influential movies that inspired the effects behind PG: Psycho Goreman.

Alastair is a relatively unimportant character, with his primary role being to act as Mimi's love interest and Luke's best friend. When he gets roped into the siblings' adventures with PG, he is merely an innocent bystander who gets transformed into a giant brain. While it can be argued the character's transformation took inspiration from another B-movie from 1957 titled The Brain From Planet Arous, Mimi's The Blob reference solidifies his appearance is meant to mirror this creature in particular.

The Blob reference is used for the director to create greater ties to the B-horror movies of the past. Being that they have been a major source of inspiration for directors in the genre, it is common for them to make brief appearances through Easter eggs like that of PG: Psycho Goreman. Alastair's transformation into a brain similar to the pink goo from The Blob acts as Kostanski's homage to those who have inspired him and undoubtedly influenced the creation of PG: Psycho Goreman as well as its use of practical effects over CGI.
