The Green Lanterns May Have The Last Ally Fans Expected

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Future State: Green Lantern #1

Future State has left the Green Lantern Corps scattered and powerless across the far reaches of the universe; things look bleak, but they may be getting help from the last person anyone expected. When the Central Power Battery and the rings it powered went dark, it put the surviving members of the GLC in precarious positions. John Stewart now leads a lethal band of freedom fighters, Jessica Cruz might have joined the scary ringbearers stepping into the GLC's now vacant position, and Guy Gardner finds himself in the most shocking position of all.

Guy Gardner has worn many hats over the decades; Green Lantern, Warrior, Red Lantern, small-business-owner, and perpetual blowhard are a few notable entries. But religious leader is probably the most surprising of all. When the battery died, Guy was taking part in a peacekeeping mission on a primitive alien world. The people on the planet are split into two factions warring over a "holy relic" (which in reality is a just a hunk of space metal). A ring-less and marooned Gardner gradually begins to assimilate into life on the planet, emerging as a new religious figure and uniting both tribes. He even writes a holy tome of his own, "The Book of Guy," and also finds a new location for his bar.

In the 25 years that Reverend Guy finds himself stranded, things somehow vastly improve on the planet. That is until a new prophet rides into town. That's right, Lobo arrives on the planet, lamenting that he wished he had known earlier that Gardner had opened up a new location for his Warriors bar. This new religious leader poses quite the threat to its current one, as the former has had some recent experience in the creation business. The Main Man's arrival certainly isn't treated as a good thing for the fragile peace that Guy has enabled on the alien world, but it could be a lot of help for Green Lantern Corps as a whole.

The immediate images that come to mind with Lobo arriving on Guy's planet are humorous in nature. Will he start a massive brawl that levels the new Warriors? Will he and Guy become rival preachers in something akin to The Righteous Gemstones? Once those goofier ideas are pushed aside, the mustachioed space-biker showing up has a much grander implication for the plight that the GLC is facing. Lobo is more than capable of giving Guy a ride off of the planet. He would also make for a crucial ally in the struggle in which the Corps now finds themselves.

Lobo will never be a stabilizing element. But desperate times call for desperate measures and allies. The fact of the matter is, he and Guy get along well enough, at the very least they both see the value in a stiff drink and barroom camaraderie. If any member of the GLC could convince Lobo to take up the ring again, it would be Guy Gardner. The Green Lantern Corps members are in a tight spot; they're powerless and stranded across an endless galaxy with no means of communications and vicious enemies like the God in Red and the Sinestro Corps pinning them against the wall. An absolute powerhouse like Lobo could be just the thing they need to turn the tide.
