There were five Final Fantasy games that were meant to come to Xbox Game Pass in 2020, but Microsoft has confirmed that they're still coming to the service. Microsoft has struggled to find a foothold in Japan, but it has had success bringing titles from Japanese studios to Xbox Game Pass.
Square Enix has been a huge supporter of Xbox Game Pass. Dragon Quest 11 S launched on Game Pass, while numerous Final Fantasy games have been added to the service since 2019. All of the mainline Kingdom Hearts titles are also on Game Pass, which makes it a fantastic service for JRPG fans. It's unclear whether Square Enix will launch any of the Final Fantasy games that are currently timed-exclusives on Game Pass, as Microsoft would have to pay a lot to get Final Fantasy 7 Remake or Final Fantasy 16 on day one, but either would be a massive draw.
In 2019, Square Enix announced a number of different Final Fantasy titles that were coming to Xbox Game Pass in 2021. It's 2021, and five of the announced games are still missing. Square Enix said that Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD Remaster, Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age, Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 13-2, and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 were coming to Game Pass in 2020, but they never appeared on the service. A Microsoft representative told True Achievements that the Final Fantasy games are still coming, but they didn't have a release date.
"As we announced at X019, we are excited to bring the Final Fantasy franchise to gamers with Xbox Game Pass. We have done so throughout 2020 and will continue to do so in 2021 and beyond. We look forward to announcing specific launch dates for more Final Fantasy titles in the future."
Xbox Game Pass is already one of the best deals in gaming, and the addition of some of the best Final Fantasy games would make it even greater. Final Fantasy 10 is one of the few entries in the series to eclipse Final Fantasy 7 in popularity, especially in Japan. The Zodiac Age is the definitive version of a fantastic game, as it features a ton of content that wasn't present in the PS2 original. Final Fantasy 13 and Lightning Returns are polarizing titles, but Final Fantasy 13-2 is a great game, so long as it's divorced from the other entries in the trilogy.
Microsoft has been stacking the Game Pass roster since the launch of the Xbox Series X/S, but it's reassuring to receive confirmation that the Final Fantasy titles promised in 2019 are still coming. The five missing Final Fantasy games have hundreds of hours of content, and their presence on Game Pass would add even more value to the service. If nothing else, it will give longtime Xbox fans the chance to experience the Tidus laugh for the first time.
