Slay The Spire, a popular indie card-batter roguelike game, is going to be getting a board game soon through Kickstarter. The company behind it is Contention Games, known for another board game called Imperium. Development will progress as the Kickstarter campaign does.
The card-based game has become part of a popular genre of gaming where how good the player does is based on the cards that they collect from combat or other means. Games such as Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering have these types of systems incorporated into the gameplay, and they stand as two very prominent examples of popular card-based games. Slay The Spire, however, is stepping into the realm of the physical.
According to GameSpot, Contention Games will be launching the Kickstarter sometime in the future, with no official date set yet. However, it did establish that the new board game will be designed for four players, of ages 12 and up, and that the game is intended to have 45-minute sessions, reporting that that's how long it should "roughly" take players to climb all three levels of the spire.
Slay The Spire was released to good reviews and became popular with fans of the genre, so it's not a surprise that a board game is in development. There are plenty of different ways to win the game or become the very best, with different versions of card decks and move-sets for users to use. It is funny to see that a game that started out digitally is going to be transferring to a physical form as well. Magic: The Gathering, a game that started out in physical form and had in-person tournaments recently went online with Magic Arena, so it's interesting to see a virtual game take the opposite path.
In Slay The Spire, there are also multiple different characters to use as well, such as The Watcher, a master of the divine Stances. Since most of these characters are decently represented equally across the game, it wouldn't be shocking to see them moved to the physical copy as well. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much information as to what will be included in the board game - just that it is officially in development. However, if the Kickstarter runs as planned and fans are excited, then there will surely be plenty of news coming from Contention Games soon.
Slay The Spire is available to play on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and on mobile.
