Sicario 3 Updates: Release Date Info & Cast | Screen Rant

Sicario 3 once seemed like a given but is the sequel still happening, and what will it be about? The great Denis Villeneuve helmed the original Sicario, a taut thriller about FBI agent Kate Mercer (Emily Blunt) joining a mystery task force run by Josh Brolin's CIA agent. Kate is soon pulled into a fight against Mexican cartels where nobody explains what's happening and the tactics being used are highly questionable, with "Sicario" itself meaning "hitman" in Spanish. Sicario was greeted with praise in 2015 for the performances of its cast, its suffocating atmosphere and Villeneuve's direction.

There was little about the premise that screamed franchise, which made the arrival of Sicario: Day Of The Soldado a surprise. Screenwriter Taylor Sheridan opted not to bring back Blunt's Kate, with the story instead involving Brolin's Matt and Benicio del Toro's returning assassin Alejandro waging a fresh war on Mexican drug cartels. Things get badly out of hand, and it's up to Alejandro to protect Isabel, the young daughter of the man who ordered the murder of his own family.

Sicario: Day Of The Soldado received mostly decent reviews, but for many, it was a noticeable step-down. The absence of Emily Blunt was felt and the movie ended up grossing around $10 million less than its predecessor, so what are the odds of Sicario 3?

Ahead of the release of Sicario: Day Of The Soldado in June 2018, series producer Trent Luckinbill confirmed Sicario 3 was definitely in the works. The story would likely pick up from the Sicario 2 ending, which saw Alejandro survive a gunshot to face by young gang member Miguel, who was forced to shoot him. The final scene takes place a year later, where the recovered Alejandro seemingly recruits Miguel, setting up a potential apprentice relationship in the next movie.

A sequel would also have to deal with the career impact facing Matt, as a rare display of emotion caused him to disobey orders and rescue Isabel against the strict orders of his superiors.

No casting has been confirmed for Sicario 3, but it feels like the return of Josh Brolin, Benicio del Toro and Jeffrey Donovan as recurring character Steve Forsing would be almost certain. Given the dip in interest for Sicario 2, it feels like Emily Blunt's Kate is a must for a potential trilogy capper too, and an exploration of how she evolved following the traumatic events of the original leaves a lot to explore.

Not only does Sicario 3 not have a release date, very little has been heard about the project since 2018. Taking into account Sicario: Day Of The Soldado's mixed response and the fact it cost more to produce but grossed less, it's possible the franchise has been abandoned. Perhaps if Emily Blunt signed back on interest in another movie would be reignited, but for now, it seems Sicario 3 is looking doubtful.
