UPDATE 01/21/2021 3:08PM PT: The PlayStation 5 store appears to be back online, and the Resident Evil 8 demo should be available for download for all interested.
The release of the Resident Evil 8 demo on PlayStation 5 has crashed the PS5 store, making it impossible for players to access the new gameplay. The Resident Evil 8 livestream concluded with the reveal of a brand new RE8 demo available immediately on PS5, but that announcement also drove so many players to the storefront so quickly that it has taken the service offline temporarily.
The Capcom Resident Evil 8 showcase was exciting for fans of the series, even if it didn't provide as many RE8 details as they may have liked regarding the upcoming game. The reveal stream gave the Resident Evil 8 release date, however, and the May 7, 2021 launch will bring the game to fans in the first half of the year and immediately make current-gen console gaming more appealing. The showcase also revealed a few more interesting characters joining the cast of Resident Evil 8, though the element that got the most people talking was the Resident Evil 8 PS5 demo.
The main attraction of the game's livestream was the Resident Evil 8 demo, which features a character called The Maiden. However, the excitement for that demo has also rendered the PS5 store currently unusable at time of writing. Fan demand for the Resident Evil 8 demo was so high that, nearly immediately after going live, it crashed the whole operation.
The showcase revealed that the demo is more of a taste of the game rather than a full sampling of what it will play like, and it won't see feature Resident Evil 8 protagonist Ethan Winter. That obviously wasn't enough to deter fans from wanting to play the Resident Evil 8 demo immediately, but it is caution that whatever emerges from news surrounding that gameplay won't necessarily be conclusive evidence of the game's quality one way or the other. Resident Evil 7 followed a similar pattern, though, and its demo was a hit.
With the Resident Evil series thriving thanks to stellar remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 complemented by a return to form in Resident Evil 7, there's a lot riding on the upcoming RE8. With a slew of returning characters that are nods to some of the series' best moments and an intriguing gameplay world, Resident Evil 8 looks set to deliver on some of its promise early with a sneak preview demo on PS5 - just as soon as someone is actually able to play it and tell everyone else about what it's like.
