The showrunners of Cobra Kai know where the story will end, but that won't be in season 4. The Karate Kid sequel series launched in 2018 to continue the stories of Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zapka) nearly 30 years after their rivalry began. Despite critical acclaim, Cobra Kai did not find a massive fan base until it moved to Netflix ahead of season 3. The series was previously released exclusively on YouTube Premium.
Cobra Kai season 3 is now out on Netflix and quickly picks up after the massive season 2 finale events. With Miguel in the hospital and Robby on the run from the cops, the fallout of Miyagi-do and Cobra Kai's school brawl is explored throughout the season. Cobra Kai's story evolves from there as Daniel and Johnny attempt to figure out what to do now, especially with John Kreese running Cobra Kai. Season 3 builds to another showdown between the main characters, but it ends by setting up a story that could be even bigger. Netflix already ordered Cobra Kai season 4, but now many wonder how long the series will last.
With the release of season 3, Cobra Kai showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg have taken part in many interviews breaking down the new episodes and discussing what comes next. During a recent interview with TVLine, the trio was asked about what the future holds beyond season 4. According to Heald, they know where Cobra Kai's story will end and hope to get the chance to tell it completely. He also ensured that the plan is for the story to continue past season 4.
We have an endgame in our heads. We’ve had one for quite some time, and it’s not in Season 4. It’s well beyond that. In our minds, we have seasons’ worth of story that is necessary to tell before we get to that endgame. That will be a discussion going forward with our new partners at Netflix. Can we write to that endgame? Can we know that it’s coming? That’s not always the case with television and we respect that. For now, we’re continuing to write at the same speed and with the same path that we set out with from the beginning.
With Cobra Kai's future on Netflix, it remains to be seen how long the story will continue. Although the streaming service initially found great success making shows like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black that had six and seven seasons, respectively, they've shifted focus a bit in recent years. Netflix has made a habit of keeping season counts lower and ending ongoing shows earlier than fans expected. In the last year, Netflix announced season 4 of Ozark, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and GLOW would be their last. So far, Netflix hasn't confirmed Cobra Kai will go beyond season 4.
Even though Cobra Kai's future remains in question, hopefully, Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg are told ahead of the final season when Cobra Kai will end. They might have enough ideas for the show to last several more seasons, but if Netflix wants it to end after season 5 (theoretically), then that will be it. Netflix has shown some respect regarding telling shows ahead of time when they plan on canceling a series. As long as the showrunners know when Cobra Kai could potentially end, they should reach the endgame they have in mind. All we know now is that they have no plans for season 4 to end Cobra Kai.
