Another reality hit about rich people, Bling Empire, has come to Netflix and taken the internet by storm. It’s a formula that seems to just never get old. We can’t get enough money, or get enough of watching people with money spend their money. The cast of Bling Empire is certainly exceptional. They have serious, serious money. Most of them aren’t just rich people… They’re billionaires. The first season hit Netflix on January 15 and already the people want to know if and when there will be a season 2.
Season one, which shot back in 2019, followed the cast of Asian and Asian-American Los Angelenos, Christine Chiu, Kevin Kreider, Kim Lee, Kelly Mi Li, Kane Lim, Jamie Xie, Cherie Chan, Gabriel Chiu, Anna Shay, Guy Tang, Andrew Gray, and Jessey Lee. As we got to know them and their ever-impressive wealth, we became familiar with their personal lives and private struggles. Through all the drama, though, there was always a party. The Lunar New Year party, Diamonds are forever party, and Jevon’s 100 Day party were all lavish, yes, but also noticeably mask-less and not socially distanced. The cast flew to Paris, to Las Vegas, and partied all night, blissfully unaware of the coronavirus that was about to take the world by storm. So given the new reality of life in the virus, we all have to wonder if the jet-setting, brunching, gossiping party life can be captured for another season.
As of now, there has been no official pick up by Netflix for season 2. But that shouldn’t necessarily feel like the bad news it sounds like. The show skyrocketed to Netflix’s top ten almost overnight. It would be unlikely for the show not to eventually do another season or 10. Selling Sunset is a prime example of Netflix's popularity based renewal system. And since Bling Empire is even more popular than Selling Sunset, Netflix's pause on renewing Bling Empire is more than likely simply a matter of managing the chaos that is TV production during a pandemic. Some hopefuls say a season two could be upon us by early 2022. What that season would look like is a whole other story.
Since it would be hard to impossible for the friends to party and get together in the same way they did pre-pandemic, some think there’s potential for a virtual season two that follows cast members as they quarantine with their families. As for who would return, there’s reason to believe Kevin Kreider, Christine Chiu, Anna Shay, Kelly Mi Li, Kim Lee, and Kane Lim would all come back for another season.
And who knows, perhaps we will be gifted with a new cast member? Perhaps another Amanza à la Selling Sunset! Though it may be frustrating to wait for Bling Empire’s return, we should all listen to the wise words of Queen Anna Shay, who said of the show, “I'm just going with the flow...it's hard to plan these things… If something happens to you, you just have to roll with it.”
Bling Empire is now streaming on Netflix.
