Ahsoka Show Rumors Tease A Potential Star Wars Rebels Sequel

The Mandalorian spinoff Ahsoka may not premiere on Disney+ until 2022 at the earliest, but audiences are already getting an idea of what they show may be and how it could tie into Star Wars Rebels. Fan favorite Ahsoka Tano was created for The Clone Wars movie and its subsequent TV series as Anakin Skywalker's Padawan. The character appeared in both projects and in Star Wars Rebels before her live-action debut in Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian, as played by Rosario Dawson. Ahsoka also had a brief, voice-only cameo during the climax of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Though it had been rumored for months, Ahsoka was first officially announced in December 2020 at Disney's Investor Day by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Developed by The Mandalorian executive producers Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, little was revealed about the plot of the show, other than it would take place in the same universe as The Mandalorian and another spinoff Rangers of the New Republic. While not much is officially known about Ahsoka, fans are potentially starting to learn more about why this series is going to be so pivotal to the Star Wars universe thanks to some recent rumors.

According to the YouTube channel Kessel Run Transmissions, the driving plot of the series revolves around Ahsoka's search for Grand Admiral Thrawn, one of the primary villains of Star Wars Rebels, and, thusly, her search for Ezra Bridger, who was last seen aboard Thrawn's Star Destroyer in the series' last episode. This isn't entirely surprising considering the end of Star Wars Rebels saw Ahsoka teaming with Sabine Wren to track down Ezra, while Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian featured Ahsoka battling Morgan Elsbeth and demanding knowledge on the whereabouts of Thrawn. What's new, however, is that Filoni and Favreau are said to be using existing scripts for the proposed animated Rebels sequel.

Apparently, a number of scripts had already been written and were in development when Lucasfilm decided to pivot to a live-action series. So the good news is that viewers may be getting a Star Wars Rebels sequel of sorts, but the bad news (at least for some fans) is that, if these rumors are correct, the sequel will be the live-action Ahsoka series, and not an animated sequel. Sabine Wren is also rumored to be introduced as a partner for Ahsoka, with the show including live-action versions of both Ezra and Thrawn, who are said to be getting their own series as well. Of course, nothing is confirmed at this point, so it's best to take these rumors with a grain of salt.

It's clear Lucasfilm has lofty expectations for the Star Wars universe on Disney+. Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, there have been just five films and one series launched. Now there are 10 announced Star Wars TV projects through 2023, in addition to feature films from Patty Jenkins, Taika Waititi and producer Kevin Feige. It feels like things are just getting started in Phase 1 of this new Star Wars television universe with many exciting projects, including Ahsoka, still to come.
