5 Best Outfits From The Devil Wears Prada (& 5 Worst)

After watching the 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada, viewers are probably thankful they don’t work at the movie’s Runway magazine. The magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep), is impossible to please. Newcomer Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) feels like a fish out of water in the fashion industry. Her fashion is far from glamorous.

However, Andy soon learns that she must adjust her wardrobe choices if she’s going to be successful at her job. She completely transforms. The movie focuses just as much on fashion as it does on the storyline. There are many groundbreaking, iconic outfits. So, what makes the “best dressed” list? Meanwhile, which outfits belong on the “worst dressed” list?

10 Worst Dressed: Andy’s Paris Plaid And Fur Ensemble

Towards the end of the movie, Andy impresses Miranda enough to attend Paris Fashion Week. Since she’s in Paris, one would assume that Andy would wear the best fashion. After all, she's in the fashion capital of the world.

However, instead of wearing glamorous outfits, she wears this brown plaid dress with a lumpy brown jacket. She also carries a brown fur purse that is equally unpleasant. Andy wears several beautiful outfits in the movie, but this is not one of her best fashion decisions.

9 Best Dressed: Miranda’s Purple Dress

Because she’s the editor of Runway, it’s expected that Miranda wears the best clothes. She wears many iconic outfits throughout the movie, including a pinstriped ensemble, a gold blinged-out jacket, scarves, statement fur coats (that she flings onto Andy’s work desk), etc. Miranda knows the fashion industry better than others.

However, perhaps her best outfit is the simple, professional purple dress she wears at the office. It’s a nice color for her, and she can still let everyone know that she rules the fashion magazine world.

8 Worst Dressed: Andy’s Chanel Outfit

Everyone (including Miranda) notices Andy’s fashion transformation halfway through the movie. Miranda is so impressed that she decides to take Andy with her to Paris Fashion Week, instead of her assistant, Emily Charlton (played by Emily Blunt). Andy is wearing this layered Chanel outfit while hearing the news. Unfortunately, this might not be the best example of Andy’s fashion transformation.

The Chanel necklace is gorgeous, but the ensemble is too busy. It’s tricky to layer clothes, and the newsboy cap doesn’t add much to the outfit. Luckily, Andy wears much better outfits throughout the rest of the movie.

7 Best Dressed: Andy’s Transformation Outfit

When Andy feels the most discouraged at her job, Runway’s art director, Nigel Kipling (Stanley Tucci), convinces her to get a makeover if she’s going to be successful. She’s not trying hard enough, so she agrees.

This is Andy’s big moment when she walks into the office wearing a glamorous business chic jacket, skirt, and thigh-high Chanel boots. Emily’s jaw drops in surprise, and who could blame her? She’s stunning. The only downfall to the outfit is the green crocheted purse, but even with that, this is still an impressive look that sparked Andy’s emergence in the fashion world.

6 Worst Dressed: Andy’s Butterfly Top

Andy learned a lot about fashion. That’s why it’s puzzling that she wore this bedazzled butterfly top while delivering the bad news to Emily that she’s no longer attending Paris Fashion Week.

While she wears a sleek black jacket over the shirt, it still doesn’t seem like an outfit Andy should wear at the magazine office. It’s surprising that Miranda didn’t ridicule her for the fashion choice.

5 Best Dressed: Andy’s Vogue Scene Outfits

After Andy’s first transformation look, the movie has a montage scene (set to Madonna’s famous song, “Vogue”) demonstrating her various outfits as she arrives at work. Each outfit is glamorous and deserves recognition. For example, she wears a black coat with a bedazzled orange pom-pom beanie. She also wears a simple white coat that’s perfect for her unique style.

In addition, Andy wears a knee-length green coat with cheetah print accents around the wrists and collar that makes her look like Jackie Kennedy Onassis. She looks elegant, and Anne Hathaway even bought the outfit after filming the movie. Finally, she wears an all-black ensemble with gold chain Chanel jewelry. It’s an outfit that even causes Miranda to stop and look at her. That’s when Andy knows she’s finally doing something right.

4 Worst Dressed: The James Holt Red Bow Dress

Fashion designers depend on Miranda’s opinion. If she doesn’t like their fashion line, they’re never going to be successful. During the movie, the Runway staff attends a preview of designer James Holt’s (Daniel Sunjata) new fashion line. Miranda gives nonverbal clues about her opinions.

At one point, James unveils a dress he designed specifically for Miranda. It’s a bold red dress with a huge red bow in the front. Miranda purses her lips, which means that the dress is a catastrophe. The dress is too outrageous, and no one would feel comfortable wearing it.

3 Best Dressed: Charity Benefit Dresses

Andy learns to master her job during her fashion transformation. She manages to impress Miranda at a charity benefit hosted by Runway. She memorizes the names and appearances of all the guests, saving Miranda from being embarrassed, as well as helping Emily when she's too ill to remember.

The three women look stunning in their black dresses. Andy wears a sleek, floor-length dress that belongs on the red carpet. She may have ended up missing her boyfriend's birthday party, but at least she was stylish.

2 Worst Dressed: Andy’s First Day Of Work Outfit

Miranda took a chance when she hired Andy as her second assistant. Andy was different than other women who applied for the job. Regardless of this, she should have tried harder and dressed better for her first day of work.

She wears a cerulean sweater with an equally awful skirt. It’s not Runway material, but Andy thinks it’s acceptable. Nigel is brave enough to tell her exactly what he thinks of her outfit and luckily, her fashion improves.

1 Best Dressed: Andy’s Dark Green Paris Dress

Andy saves her most elegant dress for the last day of her business trip in Paris. While attending a luncheon for Runway, she wears a dark green vintage dress that looks like it belonged in the 1940s or ‘50s.

The dress demonstrates that Andy learned a lot about fashion while working for Runway. Her final dress for her job is perfectly chic, and it probably inspired viewers to try to find a dress just like it for their wardrobes.
