Gal Gadot Required Neck And Back Surgery After Wonder Woman Film Shoot

Now that Wonder Woman 1984 has finally been released, Gal Gadot is opening up about the back surgery that she needed as a result of filming 2017's Wonder Woman. Gadot first stepped into the superheroine’s shoes for 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and now has 2017’s Justice League and two standalone Wonder Woman films under her belt.

Following multiple delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 is now playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max. The film has premiered to mixed reviews, and though it was initially certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, it has since lost that status. The film picks up Diana’s narrative in 1984 of course, several decades after the setting of Wonder Woman, and follows her mission to take down Maxwell Lord, a maniacal businessman played by Pedro Pascal. Wonder Woman 1984 also introduces Kristen Wiig as Cheetah, another villain that Wonder Woman must defeat to save the world once again.

Gadot recently spoke to iHeartRadio about the movie’s long-awaited premiere and the injuries that she has endured from playing the role. Gadot explains that they shot Wonder Woman and Justice League in the same year, and she gave birth to her daughter Maya shortly after the two shoots wrapped. While the team was doing press for Wonder Woman, Gadot had a major hernia in her back and was severely limited in what she could do. She explained, “The whole six weeks of press that we did, I couldn’t sit. I could only lie down or stand up. So if you go back now and you see all of my interviews, I’m always standing.” Gadot then spent the film’s premiere day in the operating room getting her back fixed. Unfortunately,  her injuries didn’t end there, as she added that she also hurt her neck and her shoulder filming Wonder Woman 1984. She continued, saying, “It is what it is. It’s such a physical role, like the physicality is another character that I have to play. But it has its toll.

Though Gadot has military experience, she thinks it was actually her twelve years of dance background that helped her with the stunts and fight choreography. While Gadot does many of her own stunts, she has a stunt double for the more challenging moments, whom she has publicly praised. Gadot can next be seen as Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which will premiere in March 2021 on HBO Max as a four-part miniseries.

Gadot is already considered a fantastic Wonder Woman, and learning about the injuries she has suffered because of the role only adds to her real-life-superhero grandeur. It’s also incredibly accurate how she explains that the physicality is a whole other character for her, as actors commonly spend 6+ months training for these superhero roles. While fans eagerly await news of Wonder Woman 3, seeing Gadot’s performance in Wonder Woman 1984 confirms that she has certainly earned her status as a superhero.
