Valve has taken to Steam to reveal the top sellers on the platform in 2020, and the list includes everything from surprise hit Among Us to the only version of Cyberpunk 2077 that people aren't trying to get a refund for. 2020 was a busy year for the most popular PC gaming storefront, with a wealth of new releases coming out alongside the first wave of Epic Games Store exclusives making the jump to Valve's storefront. In a similar vein, Microsoft and EA also continued their embrace of the Steam platform with new releases that previously would have gone to their own personal content silos. From AAA hits to new indie gems, Steam gamers got a little bit of everything to distract them during this horrible year.
This holiday sales roundup comes alongside the annual Steam sale, where gamers can pick up a good majority of Steam's massive library at some sort of discount. While there isn't an overarching in-store event like there might have been in years past, Valve has stocked its Points Store with animated stickers, avatars, and profile backgrounds as incentive to invest more on the backlog. Just visiting the Points Store every few days gives players a new bird sticker themed after one of the year's hit games, which is a nice bonus.
In their latest blog post, Valve lists out the best-selling games of the year as well as a few more lists of notable releases from 2020. The list of top titles includes plenty of huge AAA blockbusters like Doom Eternal, Destiny 2, and PUBG. Among the top of the list are 2020's breakout indie hits Among Us and Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. The inclusion of Among Us is the most impressive of the lot considering that it's a $5 indie game that's also available for free on mobile phones. The full list of top-selling 2020 Steam releases is reproduced below:
- Among Us
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Destiny 2
- Doom Eternal
- Dota 2
- Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Monster Hunter: World
- Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Among Us also hit the top of the "Most Played" list for 2020 alongside evergreen chart-toppers Counter-Strike, Destiny, and Terraria. In the category of top-earning Early Access graduates, everyone's GOTY Hades is in good company with Noita, Golf with your Friends, and Risk of Rain 2. Steam also broke down which games were most played with a controller, and that list includes plenty of games also available on console. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot makes a top of 2020 list here alongside the PC release of Persona 4 Golden, NBA 2K20, and Dark Souls III.
While the Epic Games Store has settled into a bout of normalcy throughout 2020 after a controversial first year, Steam has continued to rise to its new challenger. Features like improved browsing of the store, the points shop, and a much-improved news hub have made Valve's storefront feel fresh and dynamic for the first time in a long time. Valve even somehow found the time to release a new Half-Life in 2020, so the future looks bright for Steam heading into the new year.
