PS5 & PS4 Players Can Log Onto The Same PSN Account At The Same Time

As the PlayStation 5’s highly anticipated November 12 launch date draws ever closer, fans have been getting plenty of new details regarding its various features in the form of online leaks and unboxing videos. A lot of these reveals have to do with the limitations of the PS5's much-discussed Solid-State Drive memory unit or the merits of its strikingly different white-and-black design, but the most recent tidbit draws attention to how it handles connecting to a PlayStation Network account that is currently being used by its last-gen cousin.

According to The Gamer, players will be able to log in to their PSN account on PS5 while one or even two PS4s are still accessing it. This could be helpful for families with multiple consoles, as a parent can boot up their PS5 in the living room without bumping off their kid playing the PS4 in their bedroom. Additionally, since all consoles share the same network, they will all be able to access the same library of games, as long as all parties have access to the internet to verify their account.

This is in contrast to the Xbox Series X, as while two Xbox One consoles can share access to a single Xbox Live account, attempting to log in with a Series X will kick the other consoles out. This is certainly an odd choice since Microsoft seems to be making efforts to promote sharing Xbox Game Pass Ultimate accounts on different devices such as consoles, PCs, and even mobile phones through its new xCloud streaming technology.

Still, the fact that players can use their PS5 and PS4 online simultaneously is a very helpful feature for those who will continue to use multiple systems in their everyday video gaming lives. It’s also another way that Sony is committed to cross-generation play and compatibility, even with the vast technological differences between its two flagship systems. Fans will be able to try this out for themselves when the PlayStation 5 is finally made available through all online retailers on November 12 (or November 19 in certain parts of the world).
