Developer Insomniac Games has detailed the changes between the two versions of Spider-Man: Miles Morales that will release on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, with most of the differences being in the game's presentation. With the launch of Spider-Man: Miles Morales just a few weeks away, the developer is ramping up its marketing for the game, including spotlighting some of the characters that are set to appear in the title.
Although little is actually known about the story of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, other than that it takes place a year after the events of Marvel's Spider-Man, Insomniac Games has revealed some key details. Most recently, the studio confirmed that Peter Parker will have a significant role in the standalone expansion. The original hero will act as a sort of guardian angel to Miles, helping to hone his crime-fighting skills.
Insomniac Games has revealed what the differences between the two different version of Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be. Speaking to Game Informer in an exclusive interview, the studio's creative director Brian Horton explained how the PS5 edition of the game is enhanced compared to the PS4 release. Most of the upgrades appear to be with the title's visuals, with the P55 version featuring ray tracing and various features that take advantage of the DualSense haptics. This allows the developer to give touch feedback to players through the controller, which is not possible on the PS4. However, there should be parity in terms of gameplay across the two editions.
"We were able to take full advantage of all the features in the PlayStation 5. One of those things was graphics fidelity; so, you're gonna see ray tracing reflections everywhere in the game on PS5. That's not something we're gonna feature on the [PS4 version]."
The developer also recently detailed another important feature in Spider-Man: Miles Morales in the form of a crime-fighting kitty companion. The web-slinging hero will have the chance to have a cat travel with him in a backpack and later fight alongside the feline. Promotional material shows the ginger cat performing takedowns while wearing a cute Spider-Man mask of its own.
It was always likely the improvements made to the PS5 edition of Spider-Man: Miles Morales would be focused on the game's presentation. After all, the developer will want to keep the core experience the same across the two different versions. Any significant gameplay changes might well have put off players from buying the title on the older console. But that doesn't stop the ray tracing and haptic feedback from the DualSense controller from being impressive, though, and possibly big enough deals to nudge players toward an upgrade.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be available on PS5 and PS4 on November 12.
