Harry Potter: Sirius Black's 5 Best Traits(& His 5 Worst)

Of all the characters from Harry Potter, Sirius Black is one of the top fan-favorites. Even though he’s only a supporting character who only features heavily in a couple of the books, his personality and his history as one of the Marauders have made him intriguing to many fans.

One of the reasons why Sirius is so compelling is that he has a lot of nuances. He might be a good character, but he has a lot of personality flaws along with a rather tragic past. His mix of good and bad traits make him particularly interesting.

10 Worst: Over-emotional

Sirius Black isn’t a person who has a lot of control over his emotions.

It’s pretty easy to tell how he is feeling, and while being expressive isn’t a bad thing, being unable to control his emotions can get him into trouble. He can be moody and easily upset when he doesn’t get his way or is cooped up such as when he has to remain at Grimmauld Place so he doesn’t get caught.

9 Best: Rebellious

While some people might see being rebellious as a bad trait, there are actually many situations where it’s a very good thing. Given Sirius’ life and his family, him being rebellious actually shows his strength of character.

Of course, at times he could take being rebellious too far, but this is part of what gave him the strength to leave his family at the age of 16 because he didn’t agree with their bigoted views on the world.

8 Worst: Thinks he’s above the rules

While rebelling against oppressive ideologies and cruel family members is a good thing, Sirius could also be extremely cavalier about rules in a way that wasn’t a good thing. While at Hogwarts, he and James definitely thought the rules didn’t apply to them.

While some rule-breaking is harmless and healthy, they often took things too far and put the safety of others at risk because they thought they didn’t have to follow rules.

7 Best: Caring

This might not be a trait people automatically associate with Sirius because he is a bit rough around the edges. While he has sides of himself that can be a bit cruel, such as when he played a trick that almost got Snape killed, he can also be really caring toward the people he cares about.

He doesn’t get to express this side of himself often that we see in the books given his rather hard life, but he shows he cares a lot about Harry many times throughout the series.

6 Worst: Arrogant

When Sirius is young, he’s attractive, popular, and talented, so he definitely gets a big head about all of this. He has a rather haughty disposition, and he can be overly confident to the point of arrogance. He often seems to think he’s better than other people, and his arrogance can get the better of him.

However, he does go through a lot after being framed and put in Azkaban for 13 years, so he isn’t as arrogant in adulthood.

5 Best: Brave

In many ways, Sirius is a great example of both the worst and best traits most associated with Gryffindor. While he can be arrogant and self-righteous, he is also extremely brave. He shows this bravery by fighting against Voldemort and his followers from the beginning.

He’s a member of the Order of the Phoenix both times it is formed, and he’s never afraid to risk his life to save other people that he cares about.

4 Worst: Impatient

Sirius is definitely a rather intense character, and he’s not very patient at all. This seems like his natural personality, but it also makes sense given how long he spent in Azkaban. After being in an awful prison for 13 years, it’s understandable he would be impatient about being trapped. However, he lets his impatience get the better of him when he lashes out over being stuck in Grimmauld Place.

He also doesn’t always understand the value of waiting and making more strategic moves as he is more the type of person to act first and think second.

3 Best: Passionate

The combination of both Sirius's negative traits and his positive traits mostly point to one overarching defining personality that has to do with passion.

While Sirius might not be overly outgoing or exuberant, he is very passionate about everything he does. He doesn’t really do anything half-way, and he is always intense about the things he cares about as well as the things he dislikes.

2 Worst: Reckless

Probably one of, if not the worst traits, Sirius Black has is that he’s extremely reckless. His arrogance and daring are often a bad combination that leads him to make poor choices that put himself and others at risk.

There are many instances of his reckless behavior such as when he, along with the other Marauders, would run around the Hogwarts grounds with Lupin in his werewolf form or when he went to King’s Cross with Harry when he was told not to.

1 Best: Loyal

While Sirus Black might have a few major flaws, one of his best overall traits is that he’s extremely loyal. He takes his friendships extremely seriously, and he definitely would have died to save the lives of any of his friends.

He is also loyal to Harry and takes his role as godfather seriously even if he doesn’t always make the best decisions. It’s really tragic that his attempts to save the Potter by making Pettigrew Secret Keep backfired when protecting his friends meant so much to him.
