Harry Potter: Ginny Weasley's 5 Best Traits (& 5 Worst)

Of all the characters in Harry Potter, Ginny Weasley might be one of the most underrated. She starts out as Ron’s kid sister who has an awkward crush on Harry, but she grows up to be a very capable witch. However, despite starting up Dumbledore’s Army after the trio left and participating in the Battle of Hogwarts, she doesn’t get all that many scenes in the books.

This is a shame because Ginny has a compelling personality and many great traits, but it also doesn’t mean she was a one-note character who didn’t have any flaws.

10 Worst: Uncertain

This personality flaw mostly applies to Ginny when she is younger, so it’s not the worst one overall. Given that Ginny was barely more than a kid when she struggled with feeling uncertain and lonely, it's hard to really fault her.

But, she was quite shy when she was a pre-teen, and she felt bad enough about herself that she put all of her trust in Tom Riddle’s diary which nearly led to her own death.

9 Best: Loyal

Given that Ginny is a Weasley, it’s not at all surprising that she is in Gryffindor. But, it’s not just her family background and connections that make her a perfect addition to this house.

Ginny is definitely loyal, and she is the type of person who will risk her own life to help the people she cares about. She’s one of the only Dumbledore’s Army members who helps the trio go to the Ministry to try to rescue Sirius, for example.

8 Worst: Petty

It’s hard to get a full grasp of Ginny’s personality traits seeing as how she’s not in as many scenes and moments as some of the more core characters.

However, we do know that she is great at the bat-bogey hex and that she’s likely to get angry at people who get on her bad side. While this isn’t entirely a bad thing as it’s always good to stick up for yourself, it does seem like she has a side where she can overreact.

7 Best: Smart

Ravenclaws are the house most associated with intellect, but members of all the different Hogwarts houses can be intelligent. Hermione is the best example of this fact. While Ginny might not get attention for being as outwardly smart as someone like Hermione, she’s clearly not dumb.

She seems to do well in her classes, and she can pick up on magic easily when she’s part of Dumbledore’s Army. Ginny also seems to be smart when it comes to relationships.

6 Worst: Explosive

Ginny might start out as a rather shy and quiet young person, but she doesn’t stay this way. She definitely grows into herself and becomes much more outspoken and self-assured, and these are both great things.

However, while she’s not someone who always reacts in an emotional way, she can be a bit explosive in her responses by using hexes on other people.

5 Best: Talented

Seeing as how Ginny isn’t one of the trio, and she’s mostly just a side character, fans only hear about her abilities in passing. However, from what we do hear, it’s clear that Ginny has many talents.

First of all, she’s good at magic and catches on quickly, but she’s also a great Quidditch player. She is so good that she grows up to be a player for the Holyhead Harpies.

4 Worst: Aloof

Ginny seems to be a bit of a contradiction in some ways, and this might just be because we only see everyone through Harry’s perspective. For most of his time at Hogwarts, Harry Doesn't really worry much about Ginny and just sees her as Ron’s younger sister. It’s only really in the 6th book that he takes notice of her and we learn more about her.

So, while Ginny seems like a very driven and passionate person, she also can come off as a little aloof and distant. But, this could also just be from Harry’s perspective.

3 Best: A leader

Characters such as Harry and Hermione have many leadership qualities that they eventually put to great use in their adult lives, but Ginny is a good leader, too.

Along with Luna and Neville, she starts up Dumbledore’s Army while Voldemort has control of the school. This shows she has strength, courage, and drive to be a good leader and to do the right thing.

2 Worst: Melancholy

One thing many fans didn’t understand about the books is why Ginny couldn’t join Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Because she wasn’t allowed to come along, it left her looking like the damsel who had to send her boyfriend off to war.

Ginny seemed rather melancholy and sad because of this, but this might be more because of circumstances than her actual personality.

1 Best: Confident

While Ginny might have been insecure as a young kid, she definitely became confident as she got older. She didn’t doubt her abilities, and she soon became quite popular.

Whether it was in relationships with boys she liked or jumping headfirst into a dangerous situation against Voldemort, Ginny was both confident and brave.
