Supernatural Season 15 Trailer Teases Final Flashback Episode

A newly released trailer for Season 15 of Supernatural hints that the show will get one last flashback episode. This trailer was released in anticipation of the show’s return to air after a coronavirus-related delay. The CW show resumed production earlier this month and is planning to release new episodes during the second week of October.

Supernatural is a fantasy horror series that is among the few shows of its kind to remain on air for over a decade. Though the show was at its peak popularity and cultural relevance in the early 2010s, it has maintained a dedicated and enthusiastic fan base throughout its entire run. Naturally, with a show running for so many seasons, the writers have gradually increased the stakes of the story over time. Early seasons featured the main characters tracking down smaller monsters and demons in a Scooby-Doo-like format, but later seasons have had larger, more threatening villains, concluding with this final season where the Winchesters are planning to literally kill God.

Earlier today, The CW posted a new trailer for Season 15 to its YouTube channel. The majority of the trailer shows brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) and their struggle to save the world once and for all. However, a brief shot about halfway through the trailer shows a young version of Sam and Dean together, standing behind a chain-link fence. Though it’s subtle, this shot indicates that the return of Supernatural will feature one last flashback episode of the brothers before the show is gone forever. You can view the trailer below.

Long time viewers of Supernatural know that flashback episodes have been a staple of the series, often used to explain the brothers’ motivations for engaging in “the family business.” The question with this new flashback episode is whether we will learn any new secrets about the Winchester family. Ackles has previously revealed that the scripts for Season 15 were actually changed in response to the ongoing pandemic, so it’s possible that the flashback episode will have a different impact on the series than initially expected.

The most likely explanation for the flashback episode, however, is that it’s simply there for narrative effect. With a long-running show like this finally coming to a close, it’s understandable that the writers would want to include a flashback to drive home the point that the show has come full circle. What better way for audiences to appreciate how far Supernatural has come than to look back to where it all started?
