It's been six years since the final episode of How I Met Your Mother aired and fans have missed it quite a lot. They have missed watching Lily and Marshall's relationship grow stronger, Barney's crazy antics, and Robin's tales about Canada. They have even missed listening to Ted's stories about his love life so it's no wonder that fans have gone back to rewatch them several times.
However, some diehard fans have found that the more they watch the show, the more some things don't make sense. Especially when fans take a look at Marshall's character. Just take a look at these examples - someone may be able to make sense of a few of them...
9 Marshall's Winking
One aspect of Marshall's character arc that didn't make sense was when the writers said that he couldn't wink. In the episode "Legendaddy," Marshall asks his friends to start joking with him about his flaws in an effort to get back to normality. The biggest flaw the gang picks on is the fact that Marshall can't wink properly.
However, some eagle-eyed fans have spotted that Marshall winked at both Ted and Barney in "Atlantic City" when Lily asked where they got a veil. It seems like the writers had forgotten about this scene...
8 His Receding Hairline
Over the nine seasons, the show had implemented a number of flashforwards and flashbacks. However, sometimes this led to some continuity errors in the story. A prime example of this was Marshall's appearance in the future. On several occasions, Marshall was seen to be grey and have a receding hair by 2020 ("How I Met Everyone Else" "Rally" ).
Yet, in "Last Forever: Part Two" Marshall is seen to have a full head of hair with no greyness in sight. It seems unlikely that he would end up losing all that hair in months so what could have caused it?
7 Why Keep The Self-Portrait?
One thing that also confused fans was the whole nude portrait storyline. In "Columns," Ted, Barney, and Robin discovered that Lily had painted a nude portrait of Marshall when they were in college. After finding the picture, Marshall gets annoyed when the group relentlessly teases the couple over it.
However, what doesn't make sense is why he would keep the portrait in the first place. Fans hear him tell the gang that he hates it so why didn't they just throw it out instead of hiding it? Marshall must have known they would find it one day.
6 His Fighting Skills
The writers further confused fans when they turned Marshall into an adept fighter. In the season 1 episode "Sweet Taste of Liberty," Marshall is seen to challenge a guy to a fight after he hits on Lily. When Lily reveals that the man is gay, Marshall proceeds to hug him and tells them that he has never been in a fight before.
However, several seasons later and the writers are seen to contradict this bit of information. For instance, in the season 4 episode "The Fight," Marshall reveals that he and his brothers had gotten into some really brutal fights. He also ends up punching Doug the bartender in the face. It doesn't make any sense...
5 The Whole Pain Relief Debacle
The contradictions to Marshall's character was further continued when the fans heard his two different opinions on pain relief. In the season 1 episode "Okay Awesome," Marshall is seen to have a dental crisis while the gang is at the club. Before he ends up getting intoxicated, Marshall is seen to ask Barney if he had any painkillers.
However, one season later and Marshall is seen saying he doesn't believe in that sort of relief. It doesn't make any sense that he would use a painkiller for toothache but not for his broken toe.
4 How Did Marshall Receive His Father's Voicemail
Fans were also confused as to how Marshall managed to retrieve his father's voicemail after his father died. As many fans remember, Marshall decided to visit a fertility clinic after he and Lily struggled to conceive ("Bad News"). After receiving the good news that he wasn't sterile, Marshall called his father to tell him the news but he doesn't pick up. Soon after, Lily arrives and tells Marshall that his father had died.
In the following episode, "Last Words," Marshall says he received a voicemail from his father that he must not have got because his phone was out of battery for weeks. However, this doesn't make any sense - surely he would have seen that he had a voicemail before Lily told him the news?
3 Sharing A Toothbrush With Lily
Another aspect of Marshall's arc that didn't make much sense was his toothbrush story. In "Perfect Week," Marshall and Lily reveal to the gang that they only share one toothbrush between them and have been doing so for years. Ted and Robin express their disgust as they also reveal that they had been using the brush too.
However, this is proven to be another continuity error as fans have noticed that Marshall and Lily were using two separate brushes in "Zip, Zip, Zip." It seems like this was just another scene that slipped from the writers' minds.
2 Marshall Always Takes Pictures With His Eyes Closed?
The issue about whether Marshall could take a good picture or not is also one that has confused fans a lot. In the season 5 episode "Say Cheese," the gang is seen to debate whether Barney could take a good picture or not. While they are on the topic, Ted reveals that Marshall isn't good at taking a picture because his eyes are always closed.
However, the writers seem to contradict themselves here with the opening titles - which shows numerous photos where Marshall had his eyes. It just seemed like the writers crammed it in for a joke because this didn't make any sense.
1 Why Aren't Marshall's Family At The Wedding?
One thing that didn't particularly make sense is why Marshall's family didn't attend his wedding. As many fans know, Lily and Marshall got married in season 2 surrounded by their friends. However, fans didn't see Marshall's parents and siblings among the guests.
It was quite a surprise really considering that fans had seen how close he was to his family in the season 1 episode "Belly Full of Turkey." If they had missed his wedding, the odds of his mother angrily calling them would be extremely likely. Yet, when fans saw them again, they didn't mention it. So why didn't they attend his wedding?
