When it comes to monsters and madmen in the haunted halls of the horror genre, sometimes filmmakers must ask themselves: what if we're not alone? But perhaps the better question would be, what if those visitors beyond the stars and across the universe weren't exactly friendly?
Evil aliens or beings from another planet/dimension have been around since H.G. Wells's day, but the horror film genre has opened the door for newer and more terrifying species of space creatures to haunt the dreams of movie-goers everywhere. Gone are the days of simple flying saucers as these monsters put the terror in extraterrestrial.
10 Martians (Mars Attacks)
Consider it an honorable mention, but there's no denying that these squawking, skull-faced sadists are memorable. In Tim Burton's quirky interpretation of a sci-fi B-Movie, these guys find new and creative ways to incinerate and mutilate their earthling victims, usually in some over-the-top and comical fashion. From decapitating Pierce Brosnan to blowing up congress, these maniacs from Mars are both humorous and horrifying.
9 Aliens (They Live)
Submit, consume, buy, stay asleep, obey— these are the commands of the evil alien overlords in John Carpenter's They Live. Though they don't rely on campy ray guns, giant robots, or a score by Danny Elfman like the aliens of the previous entry, they do have a very evil and sinister presence throughout the film.
The biggest thing these insidious invaders have going for them is their widespread control over the entire planet. The horror is a lot more subtle, but at the same time, it reaps a bigger reaction.
8 Sil (Species)
It is sometimes said that the female of a species is more deadly than they male, and Species takes that saying to heart with the villainous Sil. What separates her from some of her more voracious and power-hungry peers is her primary motivation— not to eat, not to rule the planet, but to breed. The Species franchise is definitely an uncomfortable watch due to Sil's reproductive appetites, but that's precisely the idea.
7 Predator (Predator Series)
There aren't many species in the galaxy that would go toe-to-toe with Arnold Schwarzenegger, but this ultimate hunter has never been one to back down from a challenge. Ruthlessness and intimidation are the name of the game with titular aliens of the Predator series.
With the ability to take on earthling commandos, Alien's xenomorphs, or even the characters from Mortal Kombat, the Predators are more than prepared to pursue any prey in the galaxy.
6 Klowns (Killer Klowns From Outer Space)
One of the godfathers of cult-horror films, Killer Klowns From Outer Space introduced the '80s to a new breed of alien invaders. As colorful as they are skin-crawlingly creepy, the Klowns have more than a few tricks up their sleeves when it comes to harvesting humans to satisfy their sweet tooth. If their horrifying cackles weren't scary enough, they're armed with cotton candy guns, popcorn canons, and killer shadow puppets.
5 Brandon (Brightburn)
Creepy kids will always make great horror movie baddies. An alien sleeper agent in the body of a young boy, Brandon has standard-issue superpowers such as flight, super strength, and heat vision. Think Superman, only as a slasher movie villain.
The thing is, he doesn't use them to become a superhero like most others would. Instead of becoming a force for good or symbol of hope, he becomes an emotionless force of destruction and death.
4 The Thing (The Thing)
John Carpenter was the undisputed champion of the '80s horror flick. If his tale of Michael Myers and his reign of terror on Halloween night wasn't scary enough, take a trip to the Arctic Circle for a close encounter of another kind in The Thing. The titular monster gives new meaning to hiding in plain sight, as its uncanny ability to shapeshift proves to be both horrifying and deadly for a team of researchers. Be warned: It's not a movie for the squeamish.
3 Slugs (Slither)
Another movie that isn't for weak stomachs, before James Gunn rocked the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy, he brought moviegoers this brutal body-horror flick.
When slimy, slug-like creatures emerge from a meteorite outside a small town, disgusting and vile amounts of carnage ensue when the parasites take over the bodies of some of the town's residents. As they find a host and wreak havoc across the town, the effects can be quite nauseating.
2 Xenomorph (Alien Series)
"In space, no one can hear you scream." With a simple title like Alien, the monster in Ridley Scott's classic had to be something spectacular— and man, did he ever deliver. With a hellish design by the late H.R. Giger, the Xenomorph has to be one of the most terrifying monsters in all of sci-fi. From its acid blood and bile to its gory life cycle, it definitely defines the term "cosmic horror."
1 Predalien (Alien Vs Predator: Requiem)
The Xenomorph is definitely a tough customer, but there's no way its Predator hybrid should be left off the list. What happens when two of the galaxy's most vicious species combine? This unholy union of monsters is without a doubt one of the most terrifying species out there. With the Predator's ferocity and the Xenomorph's appetite, it's the galaxy's perfect killing machine.
