The Winter Soldier's costume has some hidden Black Panther nods in this piece of unused concept art from Avengers: Infinity War. Before he was the Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan simply played Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bucky was Steve Rogers' (Chris Evans) best friend who seemingly died in the middle of World War II. However, as 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier revealed, Bucky hadn't actually died; he was kidnapped by HYDRA and turned into the brutal assassin known as the Winter Soldier. Stan has so far played Bucky in five MCU films, seven if you count end-credit appearances in Ant-Man and Black Panther.
In order to properly break through the brainwashing HYDRA instilled in him, Bucky sought help from Wakanda's scientists. The post-credits scene from Captain America: Civil War showed him going into cryostasis to protect himself and others for the time being, while the end of Black Panther revealed he had fully recovered. When Infinity War begins, Bucky is living a peaceful life on a Wakandan farm, but he soon must put that aside to join the fight against Thanos' (Josh Brolin) forces. King T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) gives him a new metal arm for the occasion.
Marvel concept artist Rodney Fuentebella shared an unused piece from Infinity War that offers a close-up look at one of Bucky's potential costumes. As Fuentebella said, "I wanted to play with the idea of subtle Black Panther design lines with a Winter Soldier look." Those design lines can be seen in Bucky's metal arm, though his vest also seems to hold some inspiration from the world of Black Panther. Check it out down below.
Bucky will next appear in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the first Marvel series to premiere on Disney+. The show was supposed to arrive this month, but the coronavirus pandemic shut down production back in March. While Stan's co-star Anthony Mackie said they didn't have much left to film, it still wasn't able to be finished in time for its planned August date. As a result, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been left without a release plan.
Still, fans are quite excited to see what The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has in store for Bucky. The show will pick up following Avengers: Endgame, which saw Bucky return from the dead and say goodbye to Steve. There's a chance Bucky's Wakandan ties will be explored in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, as Bucky's nickname White Wolf was seen on set. For the time being, though, most plot specifics remain a mystery. Still, it would be interesting to delve back into Bucky's experiences in Wakanda, especially since they haven't been touched upon since Infinity War. Fans will just have to wait and see what happens.
