The Office: 5 Reasons Why The Party Planning Committee Is The Best (& 5 Why It's The Worst)

At Dunder Mifflin, they try to create a good working environment through frequent parties that celebrate every special occasion. Despite the attempt, the Party Planning Committee did not always succeed among the employees of the Scranton branch, even though they generated hilarious moments that the viewers loved.

Usually, the parties organized by this team in The Office fulfilled their purpose: to provide employees with fun in the workplace. But, to achieve its results this committee glorified a toxic working space, where most of its members used their position to mistreat their colleagues or exclude them from the groups.

10 Best: The Frequent Parties

Who doesn't want to work in an office with an excellent working atmosphere? There are many ways to encourage unity among employees. At Dunder Mifflin, they're all about the parties, and that seems nice. Although the Party Planning Committee was not to everyone's liking, certainly every person in the office had a great time at these events.

No one complained about working at a place where they have parties every week, whether it be a birthday party, baby shower, bridal shower, work anniversary, goodbye to employees, or anything else. In fact, no one agreed when Jim tried to have just a monthly birthday party to avoid wasting time, because what fun is there in an impersonal party?

9 Worst: The Waste Of Time

Frequently, Dunder Mifflin employees in Scranton get bored as apparently, they are able to do their jobs in a short time. However, often their responsibilities are interrupted by meaningless meetings (given by Michael) or by parties.

Almost all events in this office are scheduled by the Party Planning Committee during work hours, sometimes after lunch or a couple of hours before check-out. In addition, the committee meets quite regularly to do the planning. So, because of the frequency of these parties, workers often lose a lot of time, which they then don't recover.

8 Best: Food & Drink

Dunder Mifflin's kitchen in Scranton has plenty of cereal, cookies, and all kinds of groceries, plus they have the vending machines in the break room, but the parties always have a higher standard of food and drink.

Only at the Schrute-style Christmas party was the food a little strange and no one seemed to eat. They also complained at Stanley's birthday party when Michael demanded a fruit party to help the collective weight-loss diet. But at the other celebrations, they always had Angela's famous brownies, as well as cookies, lots of alcohol and all kinds of food.

7 Worst: The Budgets

It's no secret that Dunder Mifflin went through some difficult financial times, which caused the budget for the parties to be reduced on several occasions. Even so, the Party Planning Committee members were able to organize all of the proposed parties, but with less food and decorations.

Jan once asked Michael to eliminate all unnecessary parties, but Michael didn't want to miss the opportunity to celebrate events like the 05-05-05 day. Although they spend a lot of company money on parties, the employees have paid for some receptions out of their own pockets so that they don't miss out on the fun.

6 Best: Lots Of Ice Cream And Cake

Even though cake and ice cream are part of the menu, it should be highlighted separately because both were always present at every party. All birthday people could choose their favorite type of cake (filling and topping). Michael sometimes made demands on taste, but usually, the choice of the honored employee was respected.

On the other hand, who doesn't like ice cream? That's why the Party Planning Committee bought ice cream in a variety of flavors for all the events. In addition to the cake, ice cream was a permanent element at every party, otherwise, Kevin's complaint would immediately have been heard.

5 Worst: The Exclusion

The Party Planning Committee acts as an exclusive club in which not everyone has the right to participate. The members meet during working hours and don't let other employees give their opinion about the party in question.

The power went to the head of some of its members (like Angela and Phyllis), who behaved as if this committee had a primary role inside the company, taking all the fun out of the planning and enjoyment of the parties.

4 Best: The Variety In Themes

The members of the Party Planning Committee did not lack imagination. They always organized the most original, absurd or hilarious parties for each celebration. Some of the best include the Luau Party, Phyllis's Bridal Shower, Morocco-themed Christmas party, and Toby's Goodbye Party, which was held in the parking lot and included bands and a bouncy house.

Although some of the parties seemed pretty normal, the decor was inspired by the person being honored, so they didn't complain. Only Kelly was disappointed on one occasion while Jim and Dwight were chairing the committee, because initially, they forgot her birthday, and then, gave her a rather generic cake (no decoration or theme). Thankfully, they managed to fix it by offering her a one-hour nap in the office.

3 Worst: An Abusive And Cruel Committee

Angela was the president of the Party Planning Committee for a long time. Although its members met to evaluate proposals on decoration, food and other details, in the end, she was the one who made the decisions, discarding everyone by considering that they had no style.

Phyllis' era as president wasn't very pleasant either. She wanted to revenge on Angela without realizing that she could be non-inclusive or rude. Both women led the committee members through uncomfortable situations, where new ideas were not supported and everyone who wanted to participate was cruelly despised.

2 Best: Costumes At Work

Halloween parties are the best in the Dunder Mifflin office. Throughout the day, employees can wear costumes, and before going home, they celebrate with food and drink.

Only Jim doesn't get excited about the costume, as he always excuses himself with a tag or a few details on his work clothes. The rest of the workers take it pretty seriously, and every year they try hard to be original, cute or funny, and sometimes, they are rewarded by the Party Planning Committee with a contest to choose the best costume of the day.

1 Worst: The Division

The mistreatment of the committee members created resentment among the employees. The toxic environment of this planning team, on many occasions, moved to the workplace affecting the performance of the workers.

During Christmas 2006, Angela disregarded all of Karen's suggestions and treated her rudely. In response, Pam and Karen formed their own group (the Committee to Plan Parties) and organized a more fun celebration that competed with the original. The employees were forced to choose between the two. Angela's party was not very well attended, as only Kevin was interested in the brownies.
