In the two seasons, the killers weren't the only bad seeds. There are recurring characters who are just as mean and evil who clashed heads with the main characters. Characters that audiences really disliked. The show had serial killers, corrupt cops, and characters with bad morals. Let's take a look at which characters gave audiences the chills were just plain awful. Mild spoilers ahead.

10 William Randolph Hearst

William Randolph Hearst (Matt Letscher) was a new character introduced in season two. His name may sound familiar due to the fact that he is based on her real-life Hearst, businessman, and newspaper publisher. In the show, Hearst is the owner and chief editor of the New York Journal.

The main reason audiences dislike this character is due to his superiority complex and how he treats John (Luke Evans). John is engaged to his granddaughter and constantly berates John's work at the New York Times. He also doesn't trust John and his crime-fighting escapades. He later plots with the police chief to swindles the group's investigation of the killer.

9 Biff Elson

What's New York City in the late 1890s without some gangsters? Biff Elson (Falk Hentschel) was one of the more powerful gangsters in the city who owned a brothel for homosexuals. Many disliked him because of how corrupt he was. Ellison had his hand in the police force and had many officers under his thumb doing his dirty work.

He was also prone to violent acts knowing he can get away with it. Biff was known for exploiting young boys for profit in his brothel and not caring much for their well being as long as he got considerable money. He even threatens the police commissioner.

8 Sergeant Doyle

Captain or Sergeant Doyle (Martin McCreadie) really got under many people's skin with how evil he really was on the inside. He was the right-hand man for Captain Connor. Doyle is just as bad as corrupt police come by. He had an overall angry demeanor due to his disapproval of the commissioner's trust in the main characters' solo investigation.

He used his uniform and shield as a "get-out-of-jail" free card for his illicit and unnecessary violent acts. Due to the time period, Doyle was also racist who wasn't afraid to let people know as well as a misogynist. He disapproved fo Sara's (Dakota Fanning) involvement in the police.

7 Captain Connor

Out of the whole police force, Captain Connor (David Wilmot) was one of the most corrupt officers. He had his hand in bribery and helped in the corruption of the political figures of New York. Connor wasn't shy about being derogatory towards homosexuals or people he genuinely had a hatred for.

He also had it out for Sara when she worked as a secretary for Commissioner Roosevelt (Brian Geraghty). He would make crude and sexually driven jokes in her presence. Once even threatening her with sexual misconduct. Connor also helped beat witnesses into keeping them silent.

6 Thomas Byrnes

Former Chief Police and Commissioner Thomas Brynes (Ted Levine) was at the top of the food chain when regarding corrupt police force. He was regarded as a "fixer" for the New York elite and gangsters. He was in charge of making crimes of the wealthy disappear to protect their image.

He also instructed his fellow officers to do his dirty work if necessary. Despite Byrnes's corruption, he did have some morals. He knew when to put aside his beliefs to solve a case. In the second season, despite disagreeing with Sara's involvement in the investigation, he comes to help the team in finding the killer and needing their help.

5 Goo Goo Knox

Goo Goo Knox (Frederick Schmidt) made his appearance in the second season of The Alienist. It wasn't so much his role as a criminal and leader of the Hudson Dusters that people disliked. It was more about his role in the kidnapping of infants. At one point in the investigation, the team question Knox due to his ownership of an abandoned building they were looking in to.

Knox rose the ranks as being a hated character once it was discovered he was having a romantic relationship with the killer. So infatuated with his love for her, he saw no wrong in her need to kidnap infants. He even helped in staging the dead infants once the killer had no more need for them.

4 Willem Van Bergen (Silver Smile)

In the first season, many came to believe that Silver Smile (Josef Altin) was the culprit of the murders. Silver Smile was a name given to Willem Van Bergen for his silver teeth when he was treated for syphilis. His character backstory is what had audiences disliking him.

Van Bergen was born into high society and beloved to be above the law. He grew up to have evil tendencies and had relations with boy prostitutes. He would stalk them and lure them back to his hideout. On one occasion, he was caught by his mother before he was able to spike a prostitute's drink. His history of indiscretions led his mother to bribe the police to hide his heinous acts.

3 Dr.Markoe

Dr.Markoe (Michael McElhatton) had a brief role in the second season but did a good job of having audiences dislike his character. From the first episode, fans are aware that Dr.Markoe isn't a saint and a corrupt doctor. He was the chief physician at Lying-in Hospital who did much more than help to deliver the children of unwed mothers.

It is proved that Dr.Markoe ran a side business getting rid of newborns. He offered services to the elite to discreetly get rid of children conceived with prostitutes. He also sterilized these women. Dr.Markoe also had a vendetta against Laszlo (Daniel Brühl) and his snooping into his business.

2 John Beechum

In the first season, after a whirlwind of an investigation, the team discover the killer to be John Beechum (Bill Heck). Beechum ranks as one of the worst characters due to his heinous and vile acts of murder. Since childhood, Beechum was a victim of assault and psychological abuse.

His mental instability after the war caused psychosomatic reactions causing him to have erratic behavior. One of his reactions involved the need to kill. He would stalk and hunt prostitute boys and mutilate their bodies. It was perceived that Beechum also received sexual gratification from what he did.

1 Libby Hatch

Spoiler. In the second season, the team must find the culprit behind the abduction of infants before finding another body. This proves to be someone Sara felt a connection with, Libby Hatch (Rosy McEwen). Libby works as a nurse at Lying-in Hosptial and helps Sara with the investigation at first.

It is later revealed that Libby is mentally ill after being forced to lose her child. She would abduct infants with the help of Knox and take them to her lair. She would breastfeed the infants before getting upset. Libby would then drink poison and have the baby feed on her in order to kill them before having the need again to find another child.
