Top-tier athlete Johnny Middlebrooks is looking to make a play on one of Love Island USA's resident singles this summer. CBS's new summer series is back for a second season of bikinis and boy toys. Last summer, the network launched its American adaptation of Love Island UK, a reality dating franchise that has spawned numerous spin-offs and global adaptations. Despite a lackluster ratings performance with CBS's general audience, the network renewed the show based on its impressive streaming performance and popularity with young, female viewers.
Just like the original, Love Island USA invites the country's sexiest singles to find love on a secluded island. There's no phones, no internet, no contact with the outside world whatsoever, allowing the islanders to form meaningful connections over the course of one summer. But, of course, it isn't that easy. Every week, new singles looking to shake up the existing couples enter the villa, and the contestants without a match are kicked out of the villa. This season won't be exactly like the last, however, as COVID-19 concerns necessitated extra safety precautions. Instead of returning to tropical Fiji, production relocated to The Cromwell Hotel rooftop in Las Vegas. To mitigate the spread of disease, the islanders were quarantined for weeks before entering the villa, and production staff is stationed in isolated pods.
Johnny Middlebrooks is one of the singles ready to risk his summer for love in the villa. The 22-year-old student is originally from Chesapeake, Virginia, and currently runs track and field at the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina. When he isn't sprinting on the track, he's taking classes to earn a Business degree. An athletic career coupled with visits to the gym have afforded Johnny a chiseled physique, earning him nearly 170k Instagram followers. Outside of sports, he enjoys exercising outdoors and dabbling in photography and barbering. Take a look at this Love Island contestant for yourself in the post below:
According to his CBS profile, Johnny's athletic career unfairly earns him a bad reputation as a player, even though he's ready to commit to a serious relationship. "I treat girls like queens. I understand women to a different level," he said on Love Island USA Instagram. Growing up watching his sisters have guy issues, Johnny wants to treat a girl the way he wishes his sisters were treated. Inside the villa, Johnny is hoping to find the Jada Pinkett to his Will Smith, and he's willing to step on some toes to get her. Johnny isn't a novice at stealing ladies off of men who aren't treating them well, and he isn't afraid to go after someone he wants, even if it does cause tension in the villa.
Based on his Instagram stats, Johnny is already the most popular man entering the villa, but viewers will have to wait and see if the female islanders feel the same way.
Love Island USA season 2 premieres August 24 at 8 pm on CBS and CBS All Access.
