Former Laguna Beach and The Hills star Lauren Conrad responded to beauty YouTuber James Charles after he dissed her new clean beauty line. James is no stranger to controversy. The YouTube star has garnered over 2 million followers on YouTube and Instagram and is often found at the center of the drama. He rose to fame in 2016 after being named the first male ambassador for Cover Girl cosmetics and has since developed his own makeup line with Morphe.
The beauty mogul has also developed a reputation for being at the center of multiple feuds with fellow YouTubers and other celebrities. In 2019, his feud with YouTubers Tati Westbrook and Jeffree Star snowballed into an all-out war between the beauty brands in a battle of “he said, she said.” This feud garnered mass attention as two of the most popular beauty brands lashed out at James. Starting with Tati, who accused James of manipulating straight men into hooking up. Jeffree Star jumped in calling him a “predator” on Twitter, and Charles lost millions of subscribers. Fast Forward to 2020, and both Tati and Jeffree have publicly apologized and gone on to face their own set of controversies.
Although Charles overcame last year’s drama, he’s created a whirlwind of mini feuds since. Earlier in August, the beauty blogger was criticized for his attack on Alicia Keys, who released a skincare and beauty line. James took to Twitter to claim celebrity beauty brands shouldn’t be coming out with makeup lines. Although He apologized immediately after his tweet, it appears not much has changed. The YouTuber is now lashing out at the beloved The Hills alum Lauren Conrad, who has left her days of hanging out at the Roosevelt Hotel with Brody and the gang to become a fashion mogul, wife, mother, and now beauty care creator. The drama began when James Charles took to his Instagram stories to show off a package he received of empty products saying, “I just opened a PR package from a new makeup brand from somebody who has no business having a makeup brand. Stop making makeup brands. Stop! Stop!"
Soon after, Lauren took to her own Instagram to take ownership of the mishap writing, “For those asking about the empty components sent to James... let me tell you a funny story,” she began her post. “The woman who put together the gifts (it was me) decided to fill a makeup bag full of empty samples to make sure everything would fit inside.” She continued, "When beauty products arrived and it was time to fill all the makeup bags she (again, me) accidentally included the bag full of empties with the others, and it was sent out. She will be let go immediately." Lauren, who is still the class act she always was from her reality TV days, took the mistake in stride.
Later, on August 20th, James Charles took to Instagram to formally apologize to Lauren, “Wanted to write an apology to @LaurenConrad for my stories earlier," He states. "I've been on the verge of tears all day long from a ton of things going wrong & opening her PR package was the icing on the cake of weird things happening today. My stories talking about the products were supposed to be funny but they just came across as nasty because I was so upset, not with her, but with other things that happened today. Lauren and I spoke privately about the misunderstanding & are both good." While it looks like James has dodged back-to-back feuds, it’s only a matter of time before he’ll be at the center of the drama once again.
