A photo of Google's upcoming Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G have purportedly leaked online. Possible specs of the two phones, including battery information, have also reportedly leaked, providing more insight into what the latest Pixel phones will offer, once they are officially unveiled.
Google's Pixel line is a popular brand among smartphone users seeking a unobtrusive Android experience, but many buyers of last year's Pixel 4 had issues with its poor battery life. The 5.7-inch phone's 2,800 mAh battery just didn't seem to be up to the task and, as a result, many felt the mid-tier Pixel 3a was a much better choice. So there has been a lot of interest in what would be the solution for this year. At the beginning of the month, Google unveiled its latest mid-range phone, the Pixel 4a with its 3,140 mAh battery. Google has also confirmed a 5G version of the Pixel 4a is coming, along with the Pixel 5.
According to XDA-Developers, a photo of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G was posted to Reddit recently along with some specs. The information was quickly deleted from Reddit but the photo which is still available online shows the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G side-by-side. In the image above, the Pixel 5 (on the left) is a little smaller and appears to have a textured black plastic back, compared to the larger Pixel 4a 5G on the right.
According to the leak, both phones have more powerful batteries which should theoretically make them last longer than their predecessors. The Pixel will reportedly have a 4,000 mAh battery and the Pixel 4a 5G will sport a 3,800 mAh capacity. The Pixel 5 is also reported to come with 8GB RAM and its display can run at either 60 or 90Hz. Meanwhile, the Pixel 4a 5G will only have 6GB RAM and a 60Hz display. The Pixel 4a 5G also gets an audio jack, but other than that, the leaked specs of both phones, which could be released Oct. 8, are mostly the same. For example, they both reportedly have a 12.2-megapixel rear camera, 8-megapixel front-facing camera, and rely on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 765G chipset. The Reddit post apparently didn't list the screen size for the phones, but previous leaks have suggested the Pixel 5 is expected to have a six-inch display while the Pixel 4a 5G will come in at 6.3-inches. In contrast, the Pixel 4a has a 5.8-inch screen.
While the addition of the 90Hz display is a nice add, based on the presumed specs, the Pixel 5 is shaping up to be less flagship than many might expect. A previous leak making the rounds online suggested the Pixel 5 might start at around $699 in the U.S., which is low, considering the Pixel 4 was $799 at launch. However, the Pixel 4a 5G will be starting at $499. While this is $150 higher than the 4G version, in the long run, the Pixel 4a 5G may be the better Google phone to buy, if the rumors turn out to be correct.
