For years and years, Disney has been releasing films that entertain and inspire a wide range of audiences. In the past few years, this big and influential brand has been putting out live-action versions of animated classics, such as Cinderella, The Lion King, and Lady & the Tramp.
Everyone has their favorite flick, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Plus, it is nice that fans can enjoy both of these types and more. Still, it could be fun to break it all down, listing out the reasons that animated Disney movies are the best and reasons that the live action ones are!
10 Animated: They Are Classics
The first argument in favor of cartoons would be that they are classics. Back in 1937, Disney put out Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, their first full-length animated feature film.
It was followed by well-known works like Pinocchio, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, The Little Mermaid, and, in more recent years, The Princess and the Frog and Frozen. Generation after generation has been able to enjoy popular characters, adorable stories and beloved songs.
9 Live Action: They Allow People To Re-Fall In Love With Stories
Whether a person likes an animated or a live-action version of a certain film better, one thing is for sure: It is amazing to be given the chance to fall in love with a story all over again!
Those who remember seeing original adaptations in the theater can now see an updated story, and they can bring their own kids along for the ride. Similarly, those who were not around when, say, the first Mulan came out can soon see it in a big and bold way.
8 Animated: They Are More Family Friendly (Usually)
The Disney brand has something for everyone, and they dominate in the family-friendly entertainment space. Animated shows and movies are typically targeted towards younger crowds, but there are jokes, references, tunes, and lessons that every family member can take in.
While Disney’s live-action movies are still pretty clean and innocent, things change when a human gets on the screen during a romantic scene, versus a drawing of one.
7 Live Action: They Can Add In New Twists
So far, the live action pieces from Disney have honored the original stories pretty well; the characters, plots, and costumes are all there and familiar.
Another positive aspect of these, however, would be that new twists can be incorporated. Take Sleeping Beauty, for instance, which was given a darker vibe with Maleficient.
6 Animated: The Characters Can Then Be Visited At Theme Parks
Disney does not just make films. There are television channels, radio stations, promotional products, cruise lines, and theme parks that boast this name.
It has always been so magical to grow up with characters like Belle and Tigger and then be able to go to a Disney theme park and meet these characters (with their cartoon-like characteristics) in person!
5 Live Action: The Famous Stars Get To Play Iconic Parts
On the other hand, many may prefer to see stars play these parts. For one, this excites fans of, say, Will Smith and Beyoncé. It also introduces rising stars and shows off their faces in a thrilling way.
This is also a positive due to the fact that these iconic roles are brought to life in a whole new way. There are extra layers added to the story, and seeing a famous face can make it even better.
4 Animated: It Can Be Weird To See A “Real” Animal In The Lead
Now, it is time to discuss one of the main criticisms of Disney’s live-action flicks. Animated animals are on nearly every animated TV show and film out there.
But seeing a realistic lion or bear or dog can be a bit strange. Therefore, another point goes to animated movies!
3 Live Action: It Can Be Cool To See Real People Play Out The Scenes
It has already been discussed that seeing popular actors in Disney adaptations can be a good thing. Having any human play out a truly classic scene, though, is also a great thing.
The Prince putting the glass slipper on Cinderella’s foot, Aladdin flying on the Magic Carpet, Alice falling down the rabbit hole… These memorable moments were, once again, shown off with an exhilarating and state-of-the-art vibe.
2 Animated: Exaggerated Magic Works Better In A Cartoon Setting (Usually)
A final reason that animated adaptations are better is that exaggerated magic tends to work better in a cartoon setting. Have there been fantastical live-action stories? Of course.
However, when tales like Hercules and Dumbo were first introduced by Disney, they were full of tropes and goofs and wild scenes that fit in and made sense. Some of this is lost when real people and real settings get involved.
1 Live Action: More Movies = More Chances To Discover More Magic
And here is the final point on the live action side, and it is a fabulous one. By remaking movies, Disney is releasing even more works of art, which means that fans get to go see new stories and discover more magic!
And that is always going to be a good thing. Even if a fan does like originals the best, you have to appreciate that more is available.
