All Ozark characters have been forced to evolve through the hard times brought by Marty Byrde's illegal business. Jonah (Jonah Gaertner) is, however, the only character whose growth is hard to explain as he seems to become worse with each passing day.
He has developed from the patient boy listening and understanding his parents to an erratic shotgun-wielding teenager that makes lots of wrong decisions. He is the most unpredictable character in the show, after Navarro, of course, and you can't help but hate some of his actions. However, considering the environment in which he is growing up, you have to feel bad for him sometimes.
10 Felt Bad: When He Started Laundering Money
Marty Byrde is the best money launderer there is but look where that has got him! Jonah is the only sibling comfortable with mastering the family trade despite all the trouble it has put them in. He has become a mini-criminal after using his fake ID to start his own laundering scheme.
His ambition is already getting him into trouble in school despite his young age. You can help but feel bad for him because he seems to have inherited the side of Marty that no one else wants to inherit.
9 Hated: When He Destroyed The Funeral Home
Jonah seems to be the only person that has totally lost if after Ben's death. The two were close before Ben's death, which would explain his emotional breakdown. However, compared to Charlotte's calm reaction, Jonah went over the board. He proceeds to the funeral home after hearing about his mother's involvement in his uncle's death from Helen.
Of all the people, Jonah is probably the last person you would expect to trust Helen. He distrusts his mother and goes ahead to shoot through the funeral home, which may have unknown consequences in the forthcoming season.
8 Felt Bad: When Ben Died
Ben wasn't exactly the best uncle as he advised Jonah to use his drone to spy on girls, but the two were close friends. Jonah doesn't have much of a social life because of his love for technology and laundering fake money online, but his uncle brought him some company, especially after Buddy's death.
When his uncle died, a death that may have been authorized by his own mother, it became unbearable for the teenager. Ben's death meant he has to deal with the loss of his two closest friends within a short span of time.
7 Hated: When He Tortured Animals
It is unclear exactly what caused Jonah's weird habit, but it was scary to watch him turn into a serial killer of animals. Ozark, in general, has a bad reputation when it comes to violence against animals, but Jonah's case was out of hand. The first time he did it, Wendy blamed it on the Langmores and harrassed the Langmore, which was unfair to Wyatt and his brother. His scary hobby made us think he is a cold-hearted psychopath like Darlene.
6 Felt Bad: When The Bullies Beat Him
Jonah is a smart kid, but his big brain lands him in trouble when he tricks the wrong people in the third season. He was advancing his little empire by cheating for people in school and getting paid for it. His love for the illegal is kind of interesting as he seems to follow in his dad's footsteps, but when the bullies beat him up for it, you couldn't help but feel sorry for him. He is not much of a fighter, and if Wyatt didn't show up, his disgruntled customers would have hurt him badly.
5 Hated: When He Confronted Helen
Wyatt and Erin had an uncomfortable relationship, but he never liked Helen. When Ben died, Helen was Jonah's first suspect, a position that was confirmed when his parents said that the cartel had killed him. The smart thing would be to take his parents at their word, but Jonah just wouldn't take it and go.
Confronting Helen with a cocked shotgun would have thousands of downsides to it, including his possible death. Helen also managed to use his anger against himself as she ended up turning him against his family.
4 Felt Bad: When Darlene Threatened Him
Darlene is an unpredictable psycho whose actions always seem to end up with someone dying. When she couldn't take on the Byrdes directly for interfering with her heroin distribution, she decided to use Jonah to pass her message along.
When she shoved him off his bike, you couldn't help but get scared. It looked like she would kill Jonah just to get the Byrdes' attention. After the incident, Jonah and Darlene's relationship has become cold through the second and third season, and it is understandable.
3 Hated: When He Cheated In School
The reason for hating Jonah here is not really his cheating; it is the impact it had on Wyatt's life. When he started cheating for cash, he was only being a smart kid, but when he made his "customers" angry and got caught, he was supposed to pay the price.
He, however, ended up causing trouble for everyone, including Wyatt, who only tried to save him. Jonah got off with a slap on the wrist because his dad is powerful, while poor Wyatt ended up dropping out of school.
2 Felt Bad: When Buddy Died
In Jonah's own words, "Buddy was an old man that knew how to speak to a child." Jonah and Buddy were the closest of friends developing a bond that even Marty didn't have with Jonah. When Buddy died, Jonah was very disappointed, but he still managed to be strong and track down Jonah's friends for his funeral. It was really sad watching him silently mourn the loss even as he gave the uplifting speech at Buddy's funeral.
1 Hated: When He Told About The Family Business
Jonah gets excited too much sometimes, and this seems to happen too often when he was around Erin. He assumed that Helen was as open with his daughter as his parents were with him and divulged the biggest family secret to Erin.
Considering the consequences of his action, this becomes the worst thing he has done so far in the show. He increased Helen's hatred for the Byrdes and caused Helen to cut all relationships between Erin and her dad.
