MCU: 5 Most Satisfying Character Endings (& The 5 Least)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is filled with beloved characters from a number of superhero films and comics. The universe is constantly expanding, with new characters being added regularly. But as new characters are added, some characters have their storylines finished off. With the end of Phase 3, many characters that have been a staple of the MCU since it began in 2008 saw their storylines finished off.

Some characters had their stories ended due to death and some due to personal choices. Other characters may continue to appear in the MCU but may be very different than the characters fans have grown to know and love due to the time travel. While many characters received noble endings, some endings left fans feeling unsatisfied. Check out these characters that received satisfying endings and some who didn't.

10 Least Satisfying: Liz

Liz made an appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming as Peter's love interest. The relationship between these two characters was complicated when Peter realized that Liz's father was Adrian Toomes, a villain whom he is attempting to capture. When Adrian is apprehended, Liz abruptly moves.

It seems this will be the end for Liz, which seems a bit disappointing considering the large role she played in the MCU's first Spider-Man film. This is even more frustrating when fans consider that Liz was confirmed to be a mutant in the comics, meaning that she could have easily been incorporated into the upcoming X-Men appearances. Unfortunately, there is no indication that Liz will be rejoining the cast.

9 Most Satisfying: Odin

Thor's father Odin played a large role in the MCU. Odin was a wise character who often imparted wisdom on his sons. Odin had made some mistakes in his past, but he had learned from them and grew into a person who always tried to do his best.

During Thor: RagnarokOdin's life comes to an end in a beautifully moving scene. He imparts some final wisdom on his children and makes it clear that all is forgiven. This scene gave Odin, Thor, and Loki the closure they deserved while setting up a new and interesting plotline.

8 Least Satisfying: Quicksilver

Fans got to know Wanda and Pietro in Avengers: Age of Ultron. While Wanda went on to become a fairly significant character in the MCU, Quicksilver did not have the same opportunity. That is because he died as quickly as he was introduced. Though he died nobly, saving Hawkeye and Costel, it seems a shame to lose such an interesting character so quickly.

7 Most Satisfying: Thanos

Thanos is arguably the most powerful villain in all of the MCU. His evil plot was carried out through several films and even when not seen, he was working in the background to advance his scheme. Though the Avengers undid Thanos' snap, the devastation caused by him remains and Thanos is the only villain in the MCU to have won for a significant period of time.

At the beginning of Avengers: Endgame, fans were shocked when Thanos was swiftly killed. But this wasn't the end of his storyline as an alternate version of him emerged to cause chaos. This led to one of the most amazing battle scenes in all of cinematic history, with superheroes from all of the MCU movies teaming up to take him down.

6 Least Satisfying: Heimdall

Heimdall was an Asgardian who was first introduced in Thor. He appeared in several MCU movies, always proving himself to be powerful, wise, loyal, and reliable. Heimdall and Thor had a close bond and Heimdall often came to Thor's aide. In the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos captured the Statesman, a craft with Asgardians, Thor, Heimdall, Loki, and Hulk onboard.

After Thanos defeated Hulk in a fight, Heimdall used the Bifrost to send Hulk to Earth, a decision he would pay for with his life. While Heimdall had a moving and noble death, the movie did not give fans the appropriate time to grieve. The plot advanced quickly after his death and not giving fans a moment to process the death of this significant character was a major letdown.

5 Most Satisfying: Black Widow

Natasha was a core character in the MCU, making many appearances in the Avengers and Captain America movies. She regularly proved that she was clever, tactical, and strong. Though Natasha is clearly a strategic thinker with the ability to craft intricate plans, Black Widow was given few opportunities to lead, often working as part of a team.

After the snap, Natasha finally got the chance to lead, running the Avengers and attempting to reform the world. When Natasha discovers there may be a way to bring everyone back, she was quick to move forward with the plan. While traveling in the past, Black Widow and Hawkeye are sent to obtain the Soul Stone. When discovering that the Soul Stone must be won by sacrificing another you care about, Hawkeye and Black Widow are both willing to die to ensure Thanos' work is undone. Hawkeye and Black Widow shared a moving goodbye before Hawkeye attempts to throw himself off the cliff. In an epic move, Natasha secures Hawkeye and throws herself off of the cliff, providing her with a noble and satisfying ending.

4 Least Satisfying: Captain America

Another core character that fans said goodbye to in Avengers: Endgame was Captain America. While returning the stones to their respective places, Steve decides to live out his life in the past, living the life he had always wanted with Peggy but never felt he could have. He then passed the shield on to Sam Wilson.

Many fans expected this ending, and while it could have been a moving moment, Steve's ending was overshadowed by many questions. Firstly, Steve's reappearance in the timeline seemed to violate the rules created in-universe, causing fans to become distracted, focusing on this oversight instead of his final moments on screen. Several questions about how he lived in the past and how this impacted other events also arose. Though a clever idea, this ending left fans wanted to know more instead of providing closure.

3 Most Satisfying: Vision

The most moving and shocking death in Avengers: Infinity War is Vision's death. Vision was an android powered by the Mind Stone. He was a wise character who formed a beautiful relationship with Wanda. When it became clear that Thanos was going to kill Vision and obtain the Mind Stone, Wanda is forced to make a difficult decision.

As she holds Thanos off with one hand, Wanda destroys the Mind Stone with the other, effectively killing Vision. Wanda is in agony as she does this but Vision remains calm and encourages her. Thanos then uses the Time Stone to bring Vision back to life, ripping the Mind Stone from his head.

2 Least Satisfying: Loki

Loki is one of the most beloved characters in the MCU. His character showed tremendous growth, transforming from a self-centered villain into an antihero who learned to work within a team. While Loki isn't gone entirely — a past version of himself made an appearance in Avengers: Endgame and there are plans for a Loki TV show — the Loki fans have grown to know and love is gone. The development Loki made was due to a combination of very specific events that can not be emulated.

The goodbye fans got to this favorite character was a quick death in Infinity War. Before fans could process their shock and horror, the film had moved forward. Blink, and you would have missed the death of this iconic character.

1 Most Satisfying: Iron Man

The character who received the best send-off is Iron Man. The MCU started with Iron Man so it makes sense that Phase 3 would end with him. Tony had the ultimate character growth, growing from being a selfish character to one who is willing to end his life for the good of humanity. He died surrounded by those that he loved after defeating Thanos. The characters all paid tribute to him in a beautiful funeral scene.
