Director James Gunn shares a funny TikTok of a Mexican soccer player who looks eerily like Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy. Yondu (Michael Rooker) played a supporting role in the 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy, and at the time, he was something of an antagonist-turned-ally. As the leader of the Ravagers, he took young Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) from Earth and raised him. For much of Guardians of the Galaxy, Yondu chases Peter and the other Guardians around the galaxy before joining them for the final battle against Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). The father-son bond between Yondu and Peter was teased in the first film, but it wasn't until the sequel that it really flourished.
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Yondu is fully on the Guardians' side, especially after his band of Ravagers turns on him. Yondu develops an interesting relationship with Rocket (Bradley Cooper) over the course of the film, but his dynamic with Peter is really Vol. 2's beating heart. This is really shown when Yondu sacrifices himself following the final battle so that Peter can get to safety. It was Vol. 2's most emotional moment, which surprised many fans.
Guardians of the Galaxy director Gunn always seems willing to talk about his beloved Marvel franchise, even when it turns up in unlikely places. Gunn noticed a TikTok circulating that compares soccer star Luis Hernandez to Yondu. While it starts off referencing a meme, the video gets even funnier when it reveals Hernandez in full Yondu gear. Check it out for yourself in the space below.
Gunn will soon begin work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the next and most likely last MCU outing for the ragtag group. Gunn has kept most details secret, though he has teased some things. For example, Gunn hinted that there might be a major death in Vol. 3, and that Rocket will play a big role in what's to come. Vol. 3 has yet to score an official release date, but it could arrive as soon as 2022.
Sadly, however, Vol. 3 won't include Yondu rising from the dead. This doesn't mean there won't be any flashbacks with him, though Rooker did at one point say he would be open to returning to the MCU as a different character. While characters often return from the dead in the MCU, it sounds like Yondu won't be among them. In that case, it's a good thing he got such a good story in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films.
