A Doctor Who anime-style short recreates a season five scene with spectacular style. The hero of Doctor Who is the Doctor, a time-traveling alien from the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor travels through space and time in the TARDIS, and typically picks up humans he/she finds interesting to go along with him for the ride. The season five finale of the long-running British television show featured the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor attempting to fix a universe in full collapse in the episode, "The Big Bang."
Season five featured Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. The companions who accompanied the Eleventh Doctor during the fifth season were Amy Pond, Rory Williams, and River Song. Chaos ensued near the end of season five, where the Doctor was sealed away in a box called the Pandorica by his enemies, and his TARDIS exploded, causing the universe itself to collapse. The fifth season finale saw the Doctor basically trying to reset the universe by causing a second big bang.
Reddit user and artist Kurolek created a beautiful anime-style fan video depicting one of the best parts of the season five finale. Amy witnesses the Doctor being shot by a Dalek, and assumes that he died. Then, Amy finds the not-so-dead Doctor rigging the Pandorica so he can fly it into the Tardis explosion. It's a lot of plot to cover in a fifteen-second animation, but the artist accomplishes it brilliantly without any dialogue. Check out the anime style short below:
Kurolek's animation style is incredibly expressive, in true anime style. While there may never be an official anime-style adaptation of Doctor Who, it's certainly an entertaining way to revisit old classic scenes. Because of the show's long history, there have been multiple actors/actresses who have played the titular character. (This is explained in the show as the Doctor regenerating into a new body every time they are mortally wounded.) As a result of the constant actor changes, Doctor Who fans tend to pick their favorite Doctor. Matt Smith's portrayal of the Eleventh Doctor is still a fan-favorite seven years after his last season. The fifth season was the Eleventh Doctor's first introduction to fans, and many consider season five to be among some of the show's best seasons overall.
With twelve seasons and counting, Doctor Who is still going strong. Although a release date for Doctor Who season 13 has yet to be announced, it's a given that the show will continue to regenerate for years to come. Even though the live-action version of the scene above came out several years ago, the fact that artists are still recreating it shows the impact it had on fans. It's a testament to the show's willingness to embrace change and move forward, as well as the strength of the leading actors and writers. The Eleventh Doctor may have regenerated back in 2013, but in the hearts of many fans, bow ties will always be cool.
