Wild Dark Fantasy Continues in Prequel Series The Last God: Songs of Lost Children

Since its debut in 2019, DC's Black Label fantasy The Last God by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Riccardo Federici has enthralled readers with the tale of Cain Anuun, and the desperate battle to end the dark reign of the titular Last God. Coming in September, the character Queen Cyanthe will be receiving her own one-shot, set in the years between the two narratives of the main book, in The Last God: Songs of Lost Children.

Setting on the dual narrative path, the main timeframe of the story of the main series takes place thirty years after a party of adventurers, led by the future King Tyr and his future Queen Cyanthe reportedly kill the titular Last God and begin a reign of questionable moral virtue that ends one day when the Last God returns and possesses Tyr in grotesque fashion. Mystery abounds as to what actually happened those thirty years past as to allow the monstrous eldritch abomination to return, a mystery which is slowly revealed as the series unfolds in the dual narrative to the present timeframe.

Set ten years after the mysterious battle, known as the battle at the Black Stair, The Last God: Songs of Lost Children features the Queen in her younger days donning a disguise and venturing outside the capitol of Tyrgolad into her kingdom to investigate reports of disappearing children and a terrifying monster out of folklore wreaking havoc upon the townspeople. Written by Dan Watters (Lucifer) with art by Steven Beach (The Last God: Tales From The Book of Ages), Songs of Lost Children promises to explore the somewhat enigmatic character of Cyanthe and provide a link between the innocent girl of her pre-battle time to the merciless warrior she becomes in later years.

The world of The Last God is a blend of videogame-esque drama and classic high fantasy, with maybe a little Edgar Rice Burroughs thrown in for good measure. Clearly taking its aesthetic cues from hit videogame series like Dark Souls, the series is known for its intense action and grisly violence, as is allowed under the Black Label. Cyanthe, one of the few surviving characters of the earlier time, is a character of many different facets: a skilled sorceress, a merciless ruler, a powerful warrior and a peasant girl who somehow defeated a god and became queen of the entire kingdom. Much attention is paid to the differences between the younger, kinder and more naïve girl of the past to the determined, iron-willed and skeptical woman of the present timeframe. No doubt this will serve as a dramatic thrust of the story.

The Last God: Songs of Lost Children #1 goes on sale September 22nd wherever comics are sold.
