Netflix's Extraction is on track to becoming the streaming platform's biggest movie ever. The action film starring Chris Hemsworth was released less than two weeks ago and is already a huge success.
Extraction follows a soldier turned black market mercenary named Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth), who is tasked with the job of rescuing the son of a powerful drug lord after he is kidnapped and held for ransom by a rival organization. However, the mission becomes complicated, and Rake is forced to navigate the underground world of drug trafficking and weapon smuggling while fighting off rival mercenaries and a corrupt police force. The film features intense and violent action sequences, including a 12-minute "oner." Director Sam Hargrave is known for his work as a stunt coordinator, so the exceptional action scenes are no surprise.
Extraction is extremely popular among Netflix users, something the streaming platform is very proud of. Netflix, notorious for being private about how well their shows or movies are doing, announced on Twitter that a projected 90 million households will watch Extraction in its first four weeks. This would make the film Netflix's biggest premiere to-date. Meanwhile, star Chris Hemsworth took to Instagram to show his appreciation for the success of the movie. He thanked everyone who watched the film to make it the number one movie in the world and said "who knows" to rumors of possible prequels or sequels to the film.
Extraction reunites the Russo Brothers and Chris Hemsworth, who worked together on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. This isn't the first time the Russo Brothers have collaborated with Marvel actors outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Russo Brothers worked with Tom Holland, aka Spider-Man/Peter Parker on their upcoming movie Cherry, a film about a man who starts robbing banks to feed his addiction. The Russos also worked with Chadwick Boseman on 21 Bridges after introducing him to the MCU as T'Challa/Black Panther.
The success of Extraction is exemplary of the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on the success of streaming platforms. As most theaters around the world remain closed, and movies are being postponed, more people are turning to streaming to get their entertainment. Subscriptions to Netflix have been growing, and they will continue to grow as long as they are one of the only studios to release new content during this time. While Extraction is shaping up to be Netflix's biggest hit, Netflix might top itself soon.
