Godzilla's Outpost 32 Location Is Named After John Carpenter's The Thing

Director Michael Dougherty says Ghidorah's outpost in Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a reference to John Carpenter's The Thing. It has been nearly one year since the MonsterVerse's latest installment. This week, Dougherty live-tweeted during a watch along and revealed several things about the film, even saying he wants to do a Godzilla B.C. story.

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the title character's co-stars, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, are contained at different Monarch outposts across the globe. An interesting tidbit is that the Outpost numbers reference other movies. Mothra's outpost is 61. 1961 was the year Mothra made her theatrical debut. Likewise, Rodan's outpost is 56. 1956 was the year Rodan flew onto the screen, which was just two years after the first Godzilla movie. Finally, Ghidorah's outpost number is 32. At first glance, the number 32 doesn't seem to mean anything. There was no Godzilla film in 1932. However, this number is actually referencing another film: the highly acclaimed John Carpenter's The Thing.

For Legendary's final MonsterVerse watch party, Michael Dougherty took over the official Godzilla: King of the Monsters Twitter account, revealing numerous tidbits on the movie. One fun fact is Ghidorah's outpost number, 32, is actually a reference to The Thing. Outpost 31 was the setting in The Thing.

One can see the irony in numbering Ghidorah's outpost similar to The Thing's. In the 1982 film, an alien creature causes havoc for anyone unfortunate to be in Outpost 31. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, an alien is unleashed, causing destruction on a grander scale. The Thing would end up being one of the most iconic horror movies ever made. A prequel was released in 2011, though it didn't do great critically. Universal announced a remake of The Thing earlier this year.

Fans had a good time picking out the Easter Eggs and references in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, such as the Maser Cannon being mentioned. Godzilla vs. Kong is the next MonsterVerse installment. Despite releasing this year, very little is known about the story. Godzilla and Kong will appear, but it's not confirmed if Rodan and Mothra will return as well. Director Adam Wingard said back in 2017 the film is a "massive monster brawl movie." Other monsters will be in the movie, but it's not known who they are. A toy leak did potentially reveal a new Titan. For now, it's speculation until Legendary finally releases a trailer and unveils more information on the highly anticipated fall blockbuster.
